University of Deusto, Bilbao
(4.4/5 based on 65+ reviews on the web)
The University of Deusto is a Spanish private university owned by the Society of Jesus, with campuses in Bilbao and San Sebastián, and the Deusto Business School branch in Madrid. It is the oldest non-State university in Spain.HistoryThe University of Deusto first opened in 1886, having been founded because of the Basque Country's desire to have its own university and the Society of Jesus's wish to move its School of Higher Studies in Laguardia to a more central place. To that effect a huge building was designed by architect Francisco de Cubas, which was the largest building in Bilbao at the time. Now it is the main building of the Bilbao campus, opposite to the Guggenheim Museum, in the district of Deusto, which gives its name to the university. The Universidad Comercial (Business College), founded in 1916, was the first business school in Spain, and the only one for nearly 50 years.Civil War and postwarThe advent of the Second Spanish Republic (1931) interrupted and altered university life at Deusto. On 23 January 1932, the Spanish Government dissolved the Company of Jesus by decree, and the University, owned by the Jesuits, was closed down. Some lectures still continued at the "Academia Vizcaína de Cultura", and the "Universidad Comercial" (Faculty of Economics) could carry on work as normal until the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. During the war, the University of Deusto became a military base, but after the fall of Bilbao in 1937 it was turned into a hospital, food supply centre, and concentration camp. It resumed classes in October 1940.

  • I can say as a former student of Deusto? So that in addition to being a prestigious University, is worth both a visit... Consists of 2 historic buildings: where it is located the shopping and the central being which appears in all photographs with 2 wonderful cloisters today I saw that they were cant... Subsequently, it has added a new building glass where new races were added: leisure, social work, etc.... also, crossing the ria by the gateway have the new library but you must of visit the old: is wonderful. Do not spend but if you can look at it from the staircase of marble that accesses it (two cashiers at the bottom). Although they have adapted to modern times, save that wonderful essence which makes it a very powerful University in all aspects. Note that I am a former student? And you know that only workers and alumni can we get married in its history Chapel!

  • Beautiful architecture and beautiful grounds. Located just next to the river, it's a fantastic campus to have a wander around.
  • Arcitecture and style are such that you will feel like royalty there.
  • Very good University, by far the best in Spain in terms of private universities, does not have much to envy to the public, not to mention that the teaching is much better. Rooms well equipped and good study area.

  • The facilities are fairly well and in general well cared.

  • The University of Deusto is just academic prestige. But it is penalised for a little sneaky commercial zeal. This Jesuit is one of the good private universities in Spain. Distance still to the best in Europe.
