Where to stay in Bilbao

Thanks to the Bilbao's safe and newly renovated metro system, all neighborhoods are any easy commute regardless of the city's characteristic rainy weather. The Casco Antiguo, or old quarter, is undoubtedly the heart of the city's and best place for trying the famous "pintxos" or small appetizers. Small boutique hotels and family-owned pensions provide affordable and convenient accommodation for those wishing to get to know this picturesque district. If you prefer a more tranquil experience away from the lively bar culture characteristic of the old quarter you might wish to stay in one of the many hotels that line the beautiful Nervión River leading down from the historical district to the Guggenheim museum.

  • Set back a little from one of the prettiest squares in the whole of Bilbao. A calm and light church.  more »
  • This church was only one minute from our hotel and we could not walk past it all the time and not visit. The outside had been cleaned and looked good, but we found the inside a bit plain.  more »

  • The Church of San Vicente is an example of the 16th century, also known as "second Gothic" Basque Gothic architecture. This church was probably built about a Hermitage of the 9th century. Its façade is Renaissance and in its interior is buried the writer and chronicler of the Villa Antonio Trueba. Precisely a statue dedicated to Trueba presides over the gardens of Albia, and the last verses of the writer can be read on the tombstone of the Church: "Say that Swan when dies sings, and today both mortal my pain has that it is perhaps that of the Swan my throat".
