Iglesia de San Nicolas, Bilbao

Church Tourist Spot
Admire the striking blend of different architectural styles at Iglesia de San Nicolas, the city's oldest church and a Spanish property of cultural interest. It was likely built in the 12th century, as evidenced by its Moorish architectural features. It also showcases a 15th-century apse, and it underwent further renovations in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The church is most recognizable by its 12th-century tower, built with Herrerian-style spire tops. Its 18th-century brick Baroque facade is strikingly different from the rest of the building. Our Bilbao vacation generator makes visiting Iglesia de San Nicolas and other Bilbao attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • It was opened in 1756, according to project of Ignacio de Ibero, and it calls the attention the showiness of his baroque facade crowned by two towers, meeting point of sailors before taking to the sea. It is said that in 1812 the temple was chosen by the General meetings of Bizkaia to sign the liberal Constitution of Cadiz. Exterior and interior restoration has enabled this church regain its glory, removing additives and showing again the quality of its factory in Ganguren (Galdakao) Ashlar stone. Inside, an octagon within a square, houses altarpieces and sculptures by Juan de Mena.
