Iglesia de San Nicolas, Bilbao

3.9
#7 of 16 in Historic Sites in Bilbao
Admire the striking blend of different architectural styles at Iglesia de San Nicolas, the city's oldest church and a Spanish property of cultural interest. It was likely built in the 12th century, as evidenced by its Moorish architectural features. It also showcases a 15th-century apse, and it underwent further renovations in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The church is most recognizable by its 12th-century tower, built with Herrerian-style spire tops. Its 18th-century brick Baroque facade is strikingly different from the rest of the building. • One of the most beautiful and interesting of Bilbao churches. By its facade could pretend that it's a tempo of large dimensions, but actually the space is small, but very well exploited with a central quadrangular and hexagonal dome design. The predominant style is Baroque (dating back to 1756), both in its facade and magnificent altarpieces by Juan de Mena arranged in the main altar and each angle of the building as of side chapels, all keeping them a style uniform to have been entrusted to the same workshop. However, its curious dome has a very Renaissance, similar to those made by Brunelleschi as the old sacristy of San Lorenzo or the Pazzi Chapel in Florence. This church was once the meeting point for sailors before taking to the sea and in 1812 was chosen by the General meetings of Bizkaia to sign the liberal Constitution of Cadiz.

  • Yet the Church in Spain basically completely lackluster, with the exception of individual samples. This church is located next to the bridge over the River, the border of the old town. In General, past her major tourist routes and not notice the Church is difficult, you can just pay attention on its facade, you can go for a short while inside. The Church is quite valid. As is known, e. Nicholas-the patron of sailors, that's sailors and were among the parishioners of the Church since it was built in the 18th century.

  • After our abundance of church attendance in Bilbao we have this church no longer from the inside. Hopefully there are more reviews on tripadvisor, which further here about messages.

  • Baroque 18th century church that served as a hideout for sailors. It is equipped with a dome and two bells. It marks the entrance to the old town.

Where to stay in Bilbao

Thanks to the Bilbao's safe and newly renovated metro system, all neighborhoods are any easy commute regardless of the city's characteristic rainy weather. The Casco Antiguo, or old quarter, is undoubtedly the heart of the city's and best place for trying the famous "pintxos" or small appetizers. Small boutique hotels and family-owned pensions provide affordable and convenient accommodation for those wishing to get to know this picturesque district. If you prefer a more tranquil experience away from the lively bar culture characteristic of the old quarter you might wish to stay in one of the many hotels that line the beautiful Nervión River leading down from the historical district to the Guggenheim museum.
