  • The Church of San Francisco de Asís de Bilbao, although it is not the oldest in the city is one of the largest and most interesting visit. It is a church of neogotico-eclectico style, which began to build at the end of the 19th century under the direction of the Bilbao architect Luis de Landecho and Urriés, on the initiative of the family Mazarredo-Zabalburu, who had his residence in a nearby Palace. Its exterior highlights its towers topped in needles that increase the sense of verticality of the building and the courtyard under which a Venetian mosaic is representing death and passage to the glory of San Francisco, as well as figures of other Holy high relief and a polychrome sculpture of the Holy in the mullion. Inside the feeling of grandeur of the temple increases with greater height and width of the central nave with respect to the sides (which do seem rather that we are inside a Cathedral), with much luminosity that provide its stained glass windows, designed and manufactured by a workshop in Munich, and colorful that brings the red marble of Ereño which were the bases of the columns and the altar. This church project received the Gold Medal of the exhibition of fine arts in that year and quite well is conserved because of recent restoration work.

  • Long ago went to Assisi. And speaking of Assisi Cathedral like I thought. In the newer Church was built in 1898, is dazzling white. The Church Avenue bus a lot and one of them goes to the Guernica.

  • I'll never understand why you can not get photos without flash, especially as in this case when the input is not cheap and the temple is desacralizado. I am Restorer and had wanted to reflect some details in a photo. The brochure sold it separately and the visit to the catacombs is irrelevant

  • Zabalburu family, who resided in the nearby Mena Palace, ceded the land and paid for part of the work of this neo-Gothic church, designed in 1890 by the architect Luis de Landecho, who devised a temple inspired by the Gothic and built cathedrals with sandstone of Mount Oiz. For this project, he obtained the gold medal at the exhibition of fine arts of Madrid of the same year. This church was built before the increase of population that took place in Bilbao at the end of century XIX, on the occasion of industrial development, reason why is called the "fifth parish". At the beginning of century XXI has been rehabilitated by Rafael Purroy. Include its interior stained glass windows (its design and construction were responsible to a craft of Munich) and the rose window of the façade.

  • In Bilbao it is known as the fifth parish. To it belong the brotherhood of Nazarenes.

Where to stay in Bilbao

Thanks to the Bilbao's safe and newly renovated metro system, all neighborhoods are any easy commute regardless of the city's characteristic rainy weather. The Casco Antiguo, or old quarter, is undoubtedly the heart of the city's and best place for trying the famous "pintxos" or small appetizers. Small boutique hotels and family-owned pensions provide affordable and convenient accommodation for those wishing to get to know this picturesque district. If you prefer a more tranquil experience away from the lively bar culture characteristic of the old quarter you might wish to stay in one of the many hotels that line the beautiful Nervión River leading down from the historical district to the Guggenheim museum.
