Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bilbao

Housed in a building that is widely regarded as architect Frank Gehry’s masterpiece, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao contains a large collection of contemporary art. The museum is seamlessly integrated into its urban surroundings, featuring interconnecting shapes of stones, glass, and titanium on a 32,500 sq m (350,000 sq ft) site along the Nervion River in the old industrial heart of the city. While modest from street level, the building is most impressive when observed from the river, and many travelers consider simply seeing the site from this viewpoint the highlight of their visit to the city. Yet the treasures inside are the real attraction for art lovers from around the world. The museum features numerous exhibits of works by prominent Spanish and international artists. It generally hosts thematic temporary shows, though the highlight is a series of steel sculptures designed by prominent artist Richard Serra. • I've been itching to visit the Guggenheim since it opened to such fanfare more than 20 years ago! And does it ever live up to its billing! We spent a whole day there and came back a second just to eat...  more »
  • It is a Museum of contemporary art, which has an innovative building on whose construction limestone, glass and titanium were used. It is fully integrated to its beautiful surroundings. Not to be missed if you visit Bilbao.

  • Beautiful building and a must see. It’s a great to approach it from the old town (seven streets), alongside the river with its diverse bridges. It’s hard to say anything about the exhibitions, as it depends on your preference of art style/artists. The ticket cost 16 euros and includes all exhibitions. Moreover, it comes with a free audio tour. This is very useful as it gives interesting background information about most pieces. I’ve spend a good 4 hours in here and thoroughly enjoyed it.
  • Loved my time in the museum, it had some really interesting exhibits that covered a whole range of history and art. The place itself is huge and really requires at least a few hours to fully explore and appreciate all the pieces. They provide audio guides in multiple languages that I'd highly recommend using as they contain amazing stories behind the art as well as interviews with the artists themselves. A number of the exhibits are quite abstract and may not be to everyone's taste but I highly recommend going in with an open mind and use the audio guides if you need more explanation, you won't be disappointed with the visual experience of the museum.
  • An amazing experience for all family. It was not too crowded queue for a weekday but always better & quicker to have online ticket scanned from your phone by staff... All pieces were interesting to see, but we had a lot of fun seeing the works of Joana Vasconcelos. Building itself is also stunning from outside. What disturbs (me) most; never ending chase between people who insist taking photos (though not allowed) and museum staff who have to warn & stop them...
  • Already outside, with the gorgeous setting next to the curving Nervion River, I marvelled at the mind bending architecture and magnificent art pieces like the giant spider, diamond ring and atom balls. Upon entering the museum, I was delighted and perplexed with thought provoking exhibitions on each of the 3 floors. I enjoyed every minute and wished I had more time than the 4 hours I had to my disposal that day. Using the audio guide made my experience a lot more meaningful. I highly recommend every visitor to Bilbao and locals alike to contemplate this fantastic museum of modern and contemporary art.
  • Modern museum with all kinds of historical exposures. If you visit museum today they have Art in China from 1989 in a current exposition. Building is architecture gem and have inside multiple very interesting exhibition describing architecture of 20th century. Also exterior is very impressive with gigantic sculpture of spider and dog. Location is near to the city so no problem with walking there and price for tickets is also acceptable.
