Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bilbao

Housed in a building that is widely regarded as architect Frank Gehry’s masterpiece, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao contains a large collection of contemporary art. The museum is seamlessly integrated into its urban surroundings, featuring interconnecting shapes of stones, glass, and titanium on a 32,500 sq m (350,000 sq ft) site along the Nervion River in the old industrial heart of the city. While modest from street level, the building is most impressive when observed from the river, and many travelers consider simply seeing the site from this viewpoint the highlight of their visit to the city. Yet the treasures inside are the real attraction for art lovers from around the world. The museum features numerous exhibits of works by prominent Spanish and international artists. It generally hosts thematic temporary shows, though the highlight is a series of steel sculptures designed by prominent artist Richard Serra. • My wife and I enjoyed the Fin de Siecle exhibition and learned a lot from the audio guide, which explained the work of many French artists of that time. There were many important works of art in this ...  more »
  • It's a must place to visit in Bilbao. Nice & modern museum, incredible arts pieces to watch. You must have time to spend on it, at least 2 hours to enjoy all the art rooms. Don't miss it.  more »
  • Museum of spectacular and extraordinary architecture and dimensions located in the heart of Bilbao overlooking the Nervión estuary and the legendary University of Deusto and close to the beautiful Doña Casilda Park. We recommend visiting it both for its art exhibitions outside where is located the source of fire and the sculpture "MOM" better known as the spider. Visit that he will not leave indifferent anyone visiting it for its beauty and location. Totally recommended.

  • Really enjoyable day! Easy walk from the town centre to get here. Spent around 3 hours in the museum itself. Worthwhile checking out the sculptures outside and spending some time on the ground floor. If you like impressionist art make sure you don't miss Floor 3!
  • Awesome. Walk around outside and take pictures. Enjoy the beautiful scenery. And then go inside the museum as well. Lots of cool exhibits. Definitely worth the entrance price. A bunch of "modern art." When a building is a work of art, I guess you can't expect any less on the inside.
  • I'm not a massive modern art lover, Copenhagen, Nice, and especially Nuremberg have good examples. The Guggenheim building is amazing and well worth a look. However the "exhibits" are abysmal. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the UK is far better. Don't want to devalue my review too much with being crass, but it's up it's own arse.
  • One of the most fascinating museum in Spain. I suppose that every tourist should visit this place because it is amazing! There are three floors to make the visit and in every one of them you can enjoy the very different kind of art. Anyway, although it could be a little pricey, it’s really worthwhile to make a visit if you are here.
  • Outside the building looks magnificent with some very fascinating sculptures. However don't think €41 for a family of four is a good price for what you get to see inside. This is due to the art work which I my eyes I thought was not very creative and quite dull. Thanks for reading my review.

Where to stay in Bilbao

Thanks to the Bilbao's safe and newly renovated metro system, all neighborhoods are any easy commute regardless of the city's characteristic rainy weather. The Casco Antiguo, or old quarter, is undoubtedly the heart of the city's and best place for trying the famous "pintxos" or small appetizers. Small boutique hotels and family-owned pensions provide affordable and convenient accommodation for those wishing to get to know this picturesque district. If you prefer a more tranquil experience away from the lively bar culture characteristic of the old quarter you might wish to stay in one of the many hotels that line the beautiful Nervión River leading down from the historical district to the Guggenheim museum.
