I've gone twice. The first, as a second course after seeing the Guggenheim, and captivated me, not only for the permanebte collection but for exhibitions. This year I've seen only the exhibition from the collection of Alicia Koplowitzs and again it has been a fantastic experience. The Assembly, the lighting, the Organization of the rooms, the staff, the pleasant Café... are added plus to the Museum's collections and exhibitions. Re-fuel in Bilbao, in short.

It is a very interesting, despite being near the Guggenheim Museum, it does not seem to be well known. The temporary exhibition was superb, and the entry booklet explained you frame by frame. The standing part, was more than contemporary art, so that involves interpretations of what you see.

For some it may be one alternative facing the Guggenheim, for others it is a more interesting option. In any case, to spend a visit and tour its halls is worth.

  • Staff helpful but unfortunately a wasted journey Sunday 11/6/17 as galleries closed. Web site said open at 10 but they were closed. Official website and up to date info on Internet posted by museum gave no indication of closure. Souvenir shop well stocked
  • Museum is free Sundays 3-8 and Wednesdays 10-3. Interesting rotating exhibits and a nice permanent collection as well (from the classic to the very, very contemporary). Lots of Spanish and Basque artists.
  • Not very friendly. But they have a good collection. And the Basque art is interesting.
  • A great collection of fine art including Renoir. There's a touchy-feely section too. Broad collection.
  • Has great permanent collections and offers fantastic exhibitions. The place is well laid out and the staff is helpful

Where to stay in Bilbao

Thanks to the Bilbao's safe and newly renovated metro system, all neighborhoods are any easy commute regardless of the city's characteristic rainy weather. The Casco Antiguo, or old quarter, is undoubtedly the heart of the city's and best place for trying the famous "pintxos" or small appetizers. Small boutique hotels and family-owned pensions provide affordable and convenient accommodation for those wishing to get to know this picturesque district. If you prefer a more tranquil experience away from the lively bar culture characteristic of the old quarter you might wish to stay in one of the many hotels that line the beautiful Nervión River leading down from the historical district to the Guggenheim museum.
