Basilica of Begona, Bilbao

4.3
#4 of 16 in Historic Sites in Bilbao
The nickname of Basilica of Begona is "La Salve," or "salute," because the steeple was the first thing sailors on the Nervión River saw when returning from sea. The basilica is open to the public until early evening, with the exception of the siesta hours in the late afternoon. This holy place is particularly festive during the major religious festivals on the 15th of August and the 11th of October, when locals and visitors make pilgrimages and attend midnight mass. • Beautiful old church. Not very special. Outside behind the Church beautiful views. We have the mountain on foot. Later on the way back to this very well turned out with the metro and lift

  • Ride the public elevator and return to standing is a mini excursion that can be completed any day. And it is part of the history of Bilbao

  • Visit this church must be wiped out, climbing up the stairs first, and then the streets going up. To climb up to see that the Church closed at day break and, cursing, go way back (just kidding). In General, the Church, though likable, but it is quite possible to do without all these adventures, especially in summer heat. Take care of yourself! There are still possible on the lift Hill district Begonia (for money). We only seen from afar, so nothing can not tell in detail.

  • A beautiful historic and emblematic place. A must see when visiting Bilbao.
  • Beautiful Basilica with the Patron Saint. The altarpiece and the Virgin is the most remarkable. Totally recommended. You have some photos.

Where to stay in Bilbao

Thanks to the Bilbao's safe and newly renovated metro system, all neighborhoods are any easy commute regardless of the city's characteristic rainy weather. The Casco Antiguo, or old quarter, is undoubtedly the heart of the city's and best place for trying the famous "pintxos" or small appetizers. Small boutique hotels and family-owned pensions provide affordable and convenient accommodation for those wishing to get to know this picturesque district. If you prefer a more tranquil experience away from the lively bar culture characteristic of the old quarter you might wish to stay in one of the many hotels that line the beautiful Nervión River leading down from the historical district to the Guggenheim museum.
