Cueva de la Pileta, Benaojan

In 1905, José Bullón was looking for bat guano to fertilize his fields when he stumbled across the entrance to Cueva de la Pileta, a cave filled with over 100 prehistoric paintings dating back to the Neolithic era. For the past century, his children and grandchildren have worked with researchers to preserve the cave and make its art accessible to people from around the world. Today, a tour led by one of Bullón's descendants guides you through the cave, explaining the history of the red, yellow, and black charcoal paintings. Investigate cavernous chambers filled with prehistoric art as well as the stalactites, stalagmites, and rock formations worn into the karstic limestone by the flow of water over millenia. Make sure you wear shoes with a good grip, because the cave floor can be slippery. If you aren't using a car, you'll need to make a 3.35 km (2.1 mi) hike from the bus or train station at Benaoján up to the cave--check out the cave's official website for the route. • Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in cave paintings and geology!! Incredibly well preserved for the age of the oldest paintings! Only €10 per person, you are given a very informative guided tour of the caves in Spanish and English and it lasts about 1.5 hours. Make sure you call to book a place in advance as they run 4 trips a day and places are limited. Make sure you wear decent shoes as parts of the caves are slippery and I don't recommend going if you have problems with mobility as there are a fair few steps in the dark.
  • Only accessible with tour. We arrived without prior reservation and were able to participate. Tour takes approximately one and a half hours. Language was Spanish and English. Good shoes recommended as cave is a bit slippery inside. The large number of cave paintings makes this definitely worth a visit.
  • This was an incredible experience for me! It was very hard for me to book a reservation. You will need to call and reserve a spot. **See Details in Attached Photo Below**
  • Amazing experience descending into a career with prehistoric drawings. It's a little bit of a climb from the parking lot to the entrance to the cave, and it's slow going within the cave as you content with wet, slippery steps. But it is definitely worth the hour tour. Groups are limited so make reservations. No photographs inside.
  • Beautiful and dramatic caves worth a visit in their own right. More special because of the history of human visitation recorded in paintings and artifacts that are 4,000 years old, 20,000 years old and up to 40,000 years old. Phone to book one of the limited daily spots on tours led competently and without fuss in Spanish and English.
