Castillo de Colomares, Benalmadena

4.2
#6 of 76 in Historic Sites in Costa del Sol
Surprisingly, builders broke ground on Castillo de Colomares in 1987 and finished in 1994. Rather than a castle of antiquity, it is an homage to Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World, and at 1,500 sq m (16,000 sq ft), the largest such monument. Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, and Mudéjar styles combine with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim influences in the architecture. Inside, explore educational exhibits about the discovery. Take a bus or taxi from the train station, as the steep walk up can be strenuous. Make Castillo de Colomares a centerpiece of your Benalmadena vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Benalmadena family vacation planner.

I went to the Colomares Castle with my children (9 & 12). The walk from Torremuelle station is 1,5 km uphill. Doable with kids. The castle looks like artificial ruins, but that is not a problem. The t...  more »

Friendly staff at the reception, it is more for kids adults... I find the price a little high compared to the interest of the visit and its duration (about 30 minutes) even if it is not limited in time, it does not deserve more beautiful view of BENALMADENA.

The visit is done in 1 / 2 h, very affordable (and we don't pay for our child to 6 years). An original, unusual architecture. Very accessible for children, without risk, without getting tired. We would not necessarily have made the detour to see the Castle, but by going to benalmadena pueblo, it's nice to stop. Kids have enjoyed more than us.

  • Great photo opportunity for any photographer! Cheap entry. English speakers at entry. Remember it closes for siesta. We turned up at siesta, pretty gutted but the man at entry pointed us to a little town up the hill in which we could grab lunch and come back. We was very grateful for this as we'd travelled quite a distance. Once entered my two daughters aged between 4-10years absolutely loved it! They ran around, climbed stairs and were amazed by the castle. We spent around a hour here! On leaving again the man running the place was very generous and ordered us a taxi back down into benalmadena. Overall a good experience 😊😊
  • It might be interesting for children, as the castle looks like it's made out of sand and there are some towers you can climb to. Not worth a drive if you not in the area anyway.
  • Nice place to visit. Not a real palace, but an elaborate monument dedicated to Cristofer Columbus. Nice views, cheap ticket & free parking.
  • Very nice place to visit. Mini castle in memory of Christopher Columbus. Very nice views from there too...
  • Interesting visit cut short by our time of arrival, we turned up just before closing time for lunch but we're allowed in for thirty minutes. Very good views and it is accessible on foot from Benalmadena Pueblo. Well worth another visit.
