Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes, Barcelona
(4.6/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web)
The Gothic Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes, a residence for nuns, dates back to the 14th century. During medieval times, the city of Barcelona protected these members of the Order of Saint Clare, although little of the defenses remain today. Note the rose window on the facade of the church. In the former dormitory, you’ll find a permanent exhibition of paintings, including works by Rubens and Velázquez. Bring your camera and a map to help find the place. • To be able to walk calmly by the cloister and the monastery gardens, is a haven of peace for the spirit.

  • It is a beautiful religious complex with a beautiful and elegant architecture. The gardens are very nice also. I recommend visiting the monastery in the evening and stay until dark, the contrast of light and shadow is very interesting. You don't hear no car, only the noise of a nearby spring and birds, very gentle and pleasant to stroll.

  • Worth the visit, especially the massive external structures preserved and for the beautiful cloister. Little known fact why not downtown: just take the metro towards University and do 10 minute walk up towards the Hill. You realize how it organized monastic life between prayer and work.
