Palau de la Musica Catalana, Barcelona

#2 of 4,538 in Nightlife in Spain
Each year more than half a million people enjoy the musical performances at Palau de la Musica Catalana, which was placed on the World Heritage List in 1997. Designed by architect Domenech i Montaner, this exquisitely ornamented structure was built between 1905 and 1908, and originally served as home to the Orfeo Catalá musical society. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Catalan architecture, the building is a fine example of the Modernist style, featuring elements made of tiles, stones, and bricks. Try to attend a concert, but at the very least arrange to join a guided tour of the site’s famous auditorium, known for its blue-gold stained glass skylight and the sculpture of Wagner’s Valkyries. • We had always wanted to see it inside, for its architecture and beauty of the decorative details, and it has not disappointed us: it is spectacular, especially the ceiling, unmatched. As much of my aunts commented that in photo it looked bigger, but, well, that's a more subjective subject.

  • The tour was a great way to learn more about the history, see the stunning details of the concert hall and sit and absorb some of the magic of the space.  more »
  • Take a tour. Worth the 50 minutes to get to learn and see. Also, take in a show. Any show in this venue is worth seeing.  more »

  • It's. Just. So. Beautiful. I've lived in Barcelona for nearly 5 years now, and I went inside for the first time BECAUSE I'M STINGY and didn't feel like paying the entrance fee (which I can now assure you is worth it). We went to see the Vivaldi Strings concert, and I just felt like I was in another era. My tip as a local - wait to go to a concert and take a tour yourself. The acoustics are all natural (at least the concert I went to), and this way you don't have to pay the steep entrance fee. It was the best birthday present I've had in a long time and I'm already planning on going to another concert soon.
  • What a feast for the eyes! It's a short tour for €20 but so worth it. The stained glass, the sculptures, the sheer beauty! We were lucky in that there were some people practicing for a concert so we got to experience the acoustics too. If we return to Barcelona we will definitely try to go see/hear a concert here.
  • The building is absolutely fascinating! Every corner is magic. So many details! Find the st George and the dragon. It's, almost in every building in Barcelona. Look for it. The prices are high. The shows don't last and it's rather boring. Or maybe I was unlucky
  • The performance was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! The performers had so much passion! It was my first legit flamenco experience and I was jaw-dropping in awe! Not to mention the backdrop of the performance. The beautifully, masterfully crafted building was just a spectacle to be in, to experience! Loved loved loved!
  • When more is More! Architectural work of art and design! See a performance so you can spend more time in this magnificent place! Nice bar area serves beverages and tapas.
