Mossen Costa i Llobera Gardens, Barcelona

#16 of 67 in Parks in Barcelona
Mossèn Costa i Llobera is a curious botanical garden in the center of Barcelona. It is situated at the foot of Montjuïc facing the sea. The park owes its name to the renowned Mallorcan poet Miquel Costa i Llobera. Despite of the gardens taking up around 6 hectares of the Montjuïc hillside, they are some of the least known and visited gardens in the city. The gardens display all kinds of plant and tree species from the desert, subdesert, tropical areas, and highlands. Worth mentioning is the huge collection of cacti (about 800 different types) originating in many different continents and countries. As well as the great collection of species of cacti and succulent plants, the gardens offer stunning panoramic views over the city's coastline and port.HistoryContrary to many of the other gardens around Montjuïc, which were created for the International Exhibition in 1929, the gardens Mossèn Costa i Llobera were designed and developed much later, in 1970. The gardens were built under the guidance of the architect Joan Maria Casamor and Joan Pañella Bonastre, professor at the Escuela de Jardinería de Barcelona (Barcelona's Municipal Gardening School) and they were initially used as an outdoor classroom for botany students. 1987 the New York Times included the park in the list of the 10 most beautiful Gardens on the planet. 1987 was not exactly a good year for this unique collection of botanical rarities though. In the winter of 1987, the gardens suffered a harsh frost, and had just recovered from the effects of another severe frost in the winter of 1985. The second frost in 1987 was fatal to many of the plants and its variety was reduced by almost 40%.A structural an aesthetic refurbishment was carried out between 2006 and 2011

  • Entrance is free of charge. A large number of cacti succulents and colors. No one in the Park local on a weekday. Met only a couple of Russian tourists), there are fountains with drinking water. Beautiful views of the sea and the port. If you go on foot Montjuic recommend to visit!

  • As with most of the gardens in Barcelona the entry is free, but despite that we only saw a couple of other people about and we did see some workers. Lower parts of the garden are a bit neglected which...  more »
  • Although the views across Port Vell from these gardens is great, the gadens themselves were rather disappointing. Got the impression they were once carefully prepared and then (possibly due to lack of...  more »

  • Very much worth visiting! I saw cactuses and plants I’d never seen before.
  • Perfect spot for Instagram pictures :P you will love it if you are a fan of cactus and palm trees. The location is also very unique being on the sea side of Montjuïc mountain and having the view of Barcelona commercial port. Btw there's no entry fee!
  • I passed through with the bicycle. Amazing plants full of parrots. A lot of strange succulents, they make you feel on another planet!
  • Lots and lots of cacti and other plants, not crowded at all - and the entrance is free!
  • A hidden, but interesting and unique park on Montjuic. Attracts young people and photographers.

Where to stay in Barcelona

Because the city's metro system makes traveling from area to area relatively painless, you have more flexibility in choosing a place to stay. Barceloneta, the neighborhood surrounding the city beach is somewhat removed from the city center, making its hotels popular with families. Only a 15-minute walk from the center, Barceloneta has a more laid-back beach atmosphere but still offers several restaurants and entertainment options. Farther away from the beach and closer to the city center, El Born is a charming neighborhood well-known for its restaurants and lively bar scene. Eixample is also popular as it is more central and home to some of the city's best shopping and tourist sites, including La Sagrada Familia. For a more traditional experience, consider staying in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of Old Barcelona. This picturesque neighborhood boasts a tight network of historical architecture with boutique hotels and traditional restaurants.
