This castle is in the Montjuic mountain at an altitude so get ready to have a beautiful view of the city of Barcelona, a view of 360°. I went to ski lift, with a stop to see the gardens, and is a special experience because before we have to take the Funicular in Paral Lel station. Therefore, in addition to the Castle, is familiar with this means of transport

February 29, 1808, a body of Napoleon's imperial troops, commanded by Colonel Floresti, went up to the mountain of Montjuïc to take possession of the Castle. ... In 1842, during the Regency of Espartero, the city of Barcelona was bombarded from this castle to get so submit a revolt. But this castle receives best prominence in the years after the so-called national uprising (Civil War 1936-1939)- and it is precisely in the case of imprisonment and execution of major political and symbolic significance of President Lluís Companys. On August 13, 1940, the Spanish authorities ordered to arrest him in La Baule, in the France occupied by the German army, and from there was taken to the Paris prison of La Santé, from which was handed over to the Francoist Spain. After spending a few days in the General direction of security in Madrid, he was transferred to Barcelona and entered in the Montjuic Castle, where it was kept confined and isolated from other prisoners in the cells of the military priest in the courtyard of the Castle. 3 October started a judicial process that concluded in just ten days, so on October 14, 1940 held a Council of war summary of less than an hour that ended with the death penalty ruling. The facts that are brought against him were opposed to hoist and tolerate the crimes in the rear, in addition to military rebellion. October 15 at six in the morning, he was shot in the moat of Eulàlia. The castle was deeply marked by this crime. This character of military prison stood until 1960, although with a certain decline. At that time it was partially ceded to the city on a visit of general Franco to Barcelona. The central Government followed, however, with the control of the new Board of Trustees, which managed it through the captain general and forced him to build him a military museum, which was to be financed by the City Council. In 1963, settled an equestrian statue of Franco in the center of the parade ground. At the same time, the architect Joaquim Ros de Ramis carried out outstanding reform of the Castle, which is supposed an important transformation of the set, especially the first enclosure, which lost their status as military Collin to be suitable as a military museum and public park. The new project only affected the floor of the courtyard of arms, the Casemates and covers, as well as the ringing of wall and ceilings in order to expose the tiles. The drawbridge was also rebuilt, electric light took to various areas and provided running water to restrooms, as well as various carpentry work. In a second phase of this intervention, were conditioned ships under the wall of sea, which also had to be part of the new equipment. The military museum was inaugurated on June 24, 1963.

  • The castle alone or rather the old fortress does not make a great impression, but the surrounding area is Great! The view of the harbor at the bottom is wonderful, and the other side is a beautiful view of the city. I recommend a roller coaster ride as it is not expensive and the views are phenomenal.
  • The view is great. You can easily get there buy bus with your public transport ticket or with tele cabin but you have to pay extra. Nice place to have a small picnic. I really enjoyed it.
  • Take the metro to the funicular railway, then the cable car up to Montjuic for some of the best views in Barcelona. The entry fee to the castle is very reasonable and gives an even better panorama of the city. One star removed because the castle toilets were out of order on our visit and by rights it should not have been open to the public.
  • Very good historic place! Entrance fee is not that expensive. I really appreciate the exhibit with movie, although I wish they expand it more for tourists to fully appreciate the historical context. Here I learned that our local Philippine hero (Jose Rizal) was also imprisoned here long ago.
  • A really nice castle that is all outdoors so you get a great walk while learning about the castle, when and why it was built the way it was. You also get amazing views of the surrounding area and all this for only 5€ (or 3€ if under 30). The teleferic (gondola) to get up is a little pricey but overall the whole experience was great and our little one really enjoyed running around in the castle.

Where to stay in Barcelona

Because the city's metro system makes traveling from area to area relatively painless, you have more flexibility in choosing a place to stay. Barceloneta, the neighborhood surrounding the city beach is somewhat removed from the city center, making its hotels popular with families. Only a 15-minute walk from the center, Barceloneta has a more laid-back beach atmosphere but still offers several restaurants and entertainment options. Farther away from the beach and closer to the city center, El Born is a charming neighborhood well-known for its restaurants and lively bar scene. Eixample is also popular as it is more central and home to some of the city's best shopping and tourist sites, including La Sagrada Familia. For a more traditional experience, consider staying in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of Old Barcelona. This picturesque neighborhood boasts a tight network of historical architecture with boutique hotels and traditional restaurants.
