Mercat Santa Caterina, Barcelona

4.3
#5 of 118 in Shopping in Barcelona
Go shopping at this vibrant food market. Mercat Santa Caterina has been in operation since 1848 and is still very popular today. You can immediately recognize the market by its iconic bright wavy roof. Mingle with locals doing their weekly shopping and pick up some fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, and meat. Some Spanish olive oil makes a great souvenir. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop for a bite to eat at one of the tapas restaurants that open onto the market. • A market that is less crowded than the Boqueria. And also cleaner and to measure, for example, a family with children. Worth stopping for some shopping or a tapa.

  • We were planning on having lunch here after seeing the museo Picasso. However the food was not appealing to the teenagers and there wasn't a lot of seating. We spent about 10 minutes. In one corner of...  more »
  • The market is certainly nice and wide, but, it's a market! Inside you will find who sells vegetables, who sells meat and who sells fish. Don't expect the fair!!

  • A whole host of fresh produces and meat products can be found here! The dried food and spices stores were truly amazing! Worth a visit but avoid peak hours and public holiday, can be overwhelming at time! There are also so bistros in there! If you are tired of figuring out where to feast yourself up, just look around!
  • El Jardi is a fantastic place to visit. Tapas great. Also wonderful location. It's in an old hospital. On Carer range De L's pita.
  • What a spectacular place to shop! It has something for everyone at the same time as staying true to traditional Spanish cuisine. The meat quality is out of this world, and the produce is some of the freshest I have ever seen. I recommend it to all! Just make sure to check opening/closing times first!
  • So much choice you are spoilt. Nice fresh produce and at a reasonable price too. As a newcomer from England to Barcelona the people were very friendly and courteous. Thanks I will shop again.
  • Great market for nicer foods. You can find out the source of the produce or meat, even develop relationships with the stall owners of you become a regular. This one is climate controlled. All the old markets are slowly getting upgrades like this. They are pricier than supermarkets but have better quality products.

Where to stay in Barcelona

Because the city's metro system makes traveling from area to area relatively painless, you have more flexibility in choosing a place to stay. Barceloneta, the neighborhood surrounding the city beach is somewhat removed from the city center, making its hotels popular with families. Only a 15-minute walk from the center, Barceloneta has a more laid-back beach atmosphere but still offers several restaurants and entertainment options. Farther away from the beach and closer to the city center, El Born is a charming neighborhood well-known for its restaurants and lively bar scene. Eixample is also popular as it is more central and home to some of the city's best shopping and tourist sites, including La Sagrada Familia. For a more traditional experience, consider staying in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of Old Barcelona. This picturesque neighborhood boasts a tight network of historical architecture with boutique hotels and traditional restaurants.
