Mercat Santa Caterina, Barcelona

(4.3/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Go shopping at this vibrant food market. Mercat Santa Caterina has been in operation since 1848 and is still very popular today. You can immediately recognize the market by its iconic bright wavy roof. Mingle with locals doing their weekly shopping and pick up some fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, and meat. Some Spanish olive oil makes a great souvenir. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop for a bite to eat at one of the tapas restaurants that open onto the market. • Original architecture for this all too typical but much less frequent than the Boqueria market.

  • We entered the market attracted by its exterior aesthetics, and we really liked what we found. In the market there is a post of food already prepared variety of dishes, croquettes, empanadas... that you can buy for rations at a good price and the quality of the food is super good... In addition, sellers are comfortable!

  • I loved being able to see a market place with such variety and cleanliness. The food was fresh, the people helpful and everything was FRESH!  more »

  • These tapas will cause the most satisfying food coma. A good spot to get your fill at the bar if you're hungry outside of the usual lunch hour and find all the other spots in the market closed.
  • We visited the market and ate at La Torna, inside the market. The market just screams fresh food and the bar had the best of the seasonal produce for us to sample. When we went there, it was mushrooms - all kinds and sizes - as well as gorgeous fish and meat tapas, washed with a nice Crianza red. Parking (watch out for tiny aisles and spaces) is just below the building. Great find!
  • Great market with normal prices for good products. Everything you could imagine can be found in this hall with great architecture. Not as touristic and stuffes as la Boqueria, but also a bit smaller.
  • Beautiful indoor market with a vast selection of fresh foods as well as prepared items. It's puddle to buy seafood from one place and have it cooked right there.
  • Good Market for all kind of fresh products. Very interesting Architecture by the Benedetta Tagliabue Studio. It includes a couple of bars for real tapas and bakery as well as a good restaurant and even a supermarket. In the back you can find some roman ruins and a geriatric residence. Very close to Barcelona Gothic center.
