Farmers Market Food & Drink
Go shopping at this vibrant food market. Mercat Santa Caterina has been in operation since 1848 and is still very popular today. You can immediately recognize the market by its iconic bright wavy roof. Mingle with locals doing their weekly shopping and pick up some fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, and meat. Some Spanish olive oil makes a great souvenir. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop for a bite to eat at one of the tapas restaurants that open onto the market. Where to stay in Barcelona

Because the city's metro system makes traveling from area to area relatively painless, you have more flexibility in choosing a place to stay. Barceloneta, the neighborhood surrounding the city beach is somewhat removed from the city center, making its hotels popular with families. Only a 15-minute walk from the center, Barceloneta has a more laid-back beach atmosphere but still offers several restaurants and entertainment options. Farther away from the beach and closer to the city center, El Born is a charming neighborhood well-known for its restaurants and lively bar scene. Eixample is also popular as it is more central and home to some of the city's best shopping and tourist sites, including La Sagrada Familia. For a more traditional experience, consider staying in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of Old Barcelona. This picturesque neighborhood boasts a tight network of historical architecture with boutique hotels and traditional restaurants.

  • This market is perfect! Good mix of tourists and locals. So much to see and taste. Great place to grab a delicious lunch or breakfast on the go for an affordable price!  more »
  • If you don't particular enjoy crowds, Santa Catarina is a much better market to actually buy some fresh products, and sit down to enjoy some food. Both restaurants attached to the markets are quite go...  more »
  • If at the cathederal then take the short walk and enjoy the sight and smell of fresh fruit, vegtables and fish. Quieter and less touristy then other food markets.  more »

  • Great market for nicer foods. You can find out the source of the produce or meat, even develop relationships with the stall owners of you become a regular. This one is climate controlled. All the old markets are slowly getting upgrades like this. They are pricier than supermarkets but have better quality products.
  • Nice market with roof. not enough options for picking an appetizer or small dish. but you can always go seat in a restaurant right next by.
  • This is the market you read about and imagine in your mind whenever somebody says 'traditional European marketplace'. A local told me it was 'just a tourist trap'. That's fine with me. More tourist traps with great food, clean countertops, and fresh produce, please.
  • Cool local market. It is very noticeable that it is all locals. We got very high quality Iberian ham, manchego cheese, olives, and bread. Be wary of the super buff meat counter guy as he yells at people window shopping and not buying anything. Fruit stand is also super neat. I had no idea so many different varieties of tomatoes existed.
  • Loved it. Awesome food. You can get anything you want from vegan to meat. Foodie's delight.
