La Barceloneta, Barcelona

4.2
#5 of 12 in Neighborhoods in Barcelona
To hit up the beaches that help make the city so beloved, head to La Barceloneta. Dip into the Mediterranean at this stretch of sand, which earned mention the second book of Don Quixote. Traditionally the fisherman’s quarter, the neighborhood still serves up fresh seafood in its abundant restaurants. Stroll along the boardwalk, watch the surfers, or stop for a glass of wine at one of the many beachside bars. Make sure you also check out two landmarks: Rebecca Horn's "Homenatge a la Barceloneta" monument and Frank Gehry's "Peix d'Or" sculpture. • This historic district of Barcelona revealed a special soul, between the city and the beach. A visit by letting himself get lost in these small streets all rights. I would just note that this district is home to hordes of unruly tourists and obnoxious, I understand that these people display placards asking a little respect...

  • At the end of the Born you arrive on this opening to the sea with the "gamba" Mariscal. This is the beginning of the Barcelona beaches that are more pleasant to walk around for swimming.

Where to stay in Barcelona

Because the city's metro system makes traveling from area to area relatively painless, you have more flexibility in choosing a place to stay. Barceloneta, the neighborhood surrounding the city beach is somewhat removed from the city center, making its hotels popular with families. Only a 15-minute walk from the center, Barceloneta has a more laid-back beach atmosphere but still offers several restaurants and entertainment options. Farther away from the beach and closer to the city center, El Born is a charming neighborhood well-known for its restaurants and lively bar scene. Eixample is also popular as it is more central and home to some of the city's best shopping and tourist sites, including La Sagrada Familia. For a more traditional experience, consider staying in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of Old Barcelona. This picturesque neighborhood boasts a tight network of historical architecture with boutique hotels and traditional restaurants.
