El Cafè de la Pedrera, Barcelona

(4.3/5 based on 14,000+ reviews on the web)
To see one of architect Antoni Gaudí’s most controversial designs, visit El Cafè de la Pedrera, known for its undulating stone facade and the wrought-iron decorations on its balconies and windows. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, the building features some of the most innovative elements of its time, including underground parking. Perhaps the most remarkable element of the building is the roof, which features enormous chimneys designed to look like medieval knights. The architect’s elaborate plans for the roof included adding a huge statue of the Virgin, but when the businessman who commissioned the building said no, Gaudí resigned from the project. Today, the roof is frequently the site of music performances. Check online for an accurate schedule of special events and available tours. • Located also in Passeig de Gràcia, right before the House Batlò, another beautiful piece signed by Gaudí a building full of very different curves, reminding stone houses, so called La Pedrera. For you for a bit and watch the damn thing! Pay to enter, but if you do not want to is beautiful to look at from the outside, too. Tour not to be missed!

  • Great building, courtyard tour begins and then lift up to the terrace, where apart from enjoy great views of the city you can admire the creative genius of Gaudi in the curved forms of building and artistic fireplaces. Then enters upper floor where there are signs of objects of inspiration for the architect (nature) and you can tour a luxuriously spacious apartment-style at the beginning of the 20th century which makes very interesting visit.

  • Nothing much to say besides you must visit it!!!! Incredible experience that culminates with the splendid roof. If you're there in Summer, have a look at the event program as they organize classic concerts some evenings, right on the roof. Splendid experience.
  • It's really the place you need to go in Barcelona because of popularity. But the visit itself was not the most satisfying. Can't say it's bad because it's still one heck of Gaudi's famous work. Top floors do have models and explanations of the building and how the fluidity of the space actually work. But it's still quite a bland visit. They could make it look nicer on the roof if they replace the chain-link fabric fences with something better looking...Safety first? Well, we are in Catalunya.
  • Very interesting. Not cheap, but certainly a good idea to pay a visit to this Gaudi building. Both the walk on the roof, the top floor and the apartment are very impressive.
  • Splendid and well presented, with a useful audio guide and well thought through items on display. The attic, with its catenary arches, was a real highlight for me. Physics and aesthetics rolled into one.
  • Buy you tickets ahead online to avoid the lines. Casa Milà is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Even if you're not into architecture or art or anything related to it, this is a must-see. Very informative and fun to see.
