Casa Mila "La Pedrera", Barcelona

4.4
#2 of 108 in Museums in Barcelona
To see one of architect Antoni Gaudí’s most controversial designs, visit Casa Mila "La Pedrera", known for its undulating stone facade and the wrought-iron decorations on its balconies and windows. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, the building features some of the most innovative elements of its time, including underground parking. Perhaps the most remarkable element of the building is the roof, which features enormous chimneys designed to look like medieval knights. The architect’s elaborate plans for the roof included adding a huge statue of the Virgin, but when the businessman who commissioned the building said no, Gaudí resigned from the project. Today, the roof is frequently the site of music performances. Check online for an accurate schedule of special events and available tours. • A fascinating look at Gaudi up close. Extremely good retrospective of his work in the attic and an illuminating tour of an apartment. An outstanding experience!  more »
  • La Pedrera was closed in January, so we only saw the outside and the beautiful balconies. It was near Casa Batillo and that area is great for walking around in. Gaudi designed the street lights and th...  more »
  • One of Gaudi's buildings. A characteristic of curvy. Many tourists is understandable. Now someone wants to share this space.

  • Stay more than the usual 25 minutes. Stare at it from the outside. People have been walking around this place for years and years without staring at it. You do it. Stay and walk around. Picture Gaudi next to you looking at it.
  • A gorgeous way to spend a few hours in Barcelona. Take your time and really look around - start at the top and work your way down. If you don’t like elevators, take the stairs because they are really small. A really gorgeous experience!
  • I cannot understand why this building is a masterpiece of art! Just because gaudi has designed it?! There are lots of building that are more beautiful. What’s so special about this building?!
  • This is probably my second favorite tourist site in Barcelona. It is so fun and interesting and delightful. Book ahead for quick entry. Sit in the inside drive and enjoy the sights and sounds. Audio tour is pretty good. The art museum was weird. Not my favorite. DO NOT MISS THE ROOF! It is the best part!
  • Good view from the outside. Haven’t gone in, so no idea about that. But is definitely a photographic spot. Must try to click from the diagonally opposite road for a good click

Where to stay in Barcelona

Because the city's metro system makes traveling from area to area relatively painless, you have more flexibility in choosing a place to stay. Barceloneta, the neighborhood surrounding the city beach is somewhat removed from the city center, making its hotels popular with families. Only a 15-minute walk from the center, Barceloneta has a more laid-back beach atmosphere but still offers several restaurants and entertainment options. Farther away from the beach and closer to the city center, El Born is a charming neighborhood well-known for its restaurants and lively bar scene. Eixample is also popular as it is more central and home to some of the city's best shopping and tourist sites, including La Sagrada Familia. For a more traditional experience, consider staying in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of Old Barcelona. This picturesque neighborhood boasts a tight network of historical architecture with boutique hotels and traditional restaurants.
