Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Barcelona / Barcelona / Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar
Cited as an outstanding example of Catalan Gothic architecture, Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar was completed in just 54 years, a remarkable feat for the time. The structure is made up of three naves of the same height, which are reinforced by tall columns 13 m (43 ft) apart—a huge distance, unmatched by any other medieval building still in existence. Known for a purity and unity of style that was rare in large buildings of its time, this imposing church features stained glass windows, but very few of the other interior decorations typically found in most Gothic churches. Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar reviews
Visited here also back in JUL 2018. Currently there is scaffolding up inside on right side - looks like roof repairs. Got here early evening, so a bit dark inside. Frankly, it is not a "must see... more »
History come to life. I watched Cathedral of the Sea so I had to step inside. Admission was free and I didn’t take too long nor was it overly crowded. You should hit this up if you are in... more »

Nice church. Inside is beautiful and magnificent. Sacred feel. Not noisy from tourists. like a large medieval building. nothing extravagant but stained windows are really perfect for its gray walls. spacious with high ceilings.
Worth visiting for sure but hey what is this with the parking?? If it's a very touristic area... SURE IT is, no need to ask, you need to make another big parking for the visitors. Streets nearby are full and they won't let you park in the empty space 500 metres from the church so tell me where I have to park...Or I just climbed up here for nothing. Anyways I was lucky to give this brilliant church a quick look. Amazing architecture ⛪❤️
Not on the original list to visit but we were in the area and it was beautiful. It was striking to see the people who were there to see the building and the faithful who were overcome being in this house of worship. We lit candles and said a prayer just like they did hundreds of years ago. This was a special moment for us.
Great building with amazing stained glass windows running around the whole building. The stained glass is worth the trip inside if you enjoy the light of the colours on a sunny day. The church is nicely formed and not to much flamboyant statues or artwork to take away the feeling of the space
The architecture and history and ritual that this place embodies gives you a sense of awe. You literally feel the centuries of history contained within the very stones of this building. When you step inside the Basilica it feels as if you have stepped back in time to Ancient Spain
