Arc de Triomf, Barcelona

(3.9/5 based on 1,900+ reviews on the web)
Like Barcelona itself, the Arc de Triomf is at once both international and Spanish. Spend some time enjoying the street artists and carnival-like atmosphere that surround this arch. Gaze up at it and try to decipher the various symbols. While the style and proportions are classical, out of respect for visitors from abroad, the red brick and sculptures are in line with neo-Mudéjar Spanish architecture. This was a fashionable choice before the turn of the 20th century, when this arch was built. To visit Arc de Triomf on your trip to Barcelona, use our Barcelona travel itinerary planner.

  • The triumphal arch (Arc de Triomf in Catalan) Barcelona is a mudejar style building located at the intersection between Passeig de Lluís Companys and Passeig de Sant Joan. The arch, 30 metres high, was built by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas on the occasion of the universal exhibition of 1888 to serve as a gateway to the Expo site. In fact, unlike other triumphal arches celebrating military victories, the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona is more civil in that celebrates the artistic, scientific and economic progress. In the inner part of the arch you can see the shields of the 49 Spanish provinces. The arch was restored in 1989.

  • Let's say if you want to go and visit this monument is better off not being in Paris because I mean ... not really comparable! Though the Avenue is cute, you find people who sings, dances, plays, selling balloons. ... is very nice atmosphere

  • As we saw one in Rome, one in Paris, it was obvious to see this one also. It says so many about the history, and the differences between cultures, architecture styles. We've loved it so much.  more »
