The Walls of Avila, Avila
(4.7/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
Walk The Walls of Avila, medieval fortifications that once guarded the city. They completely enclose Ávila, and it’s possible to walk about halfway around. Start by picking up a free audio guide at the entrance for information about the historic enclosure. Climb its towers and enjoy views of the city, mountains, and surrounding countryside. Venture outside the city to get a sense of how foreboding the walls would have been to an outsider. Nine gates allowed access to Ávila; make sure you take a photo of Puerta del Alcázar, the most imposing of these. Put The Walls of Avila into our Avila travel itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • We looked at the walls from the coach, surrounding them during the panorama that we begin our guided tour of Avila. The Guide made us a brief history of them, which I transcribe a small summary: "the ancient walls surrounding the city are his most famous historical feature. It's one of the best preserved medieval walled enclosures in Europe. In the 3RD century BC the Romans built the first wall. Later, it is reconstructed in the 11TH century. The wall is perfectly preserved in its perimeter and there are several access doors to the city, the most important being that of San Vicente near the basilica, the large market or El Alcázar and the gate of the loyal ones that gives access to the Cathedral." Later, as recommended us by the Guide, we have surrounded them walking and enjoyed very much watching them. They have a great architectural beauty.

  • Everytime I see them I impress more very well preserved and its historic centre of luxury. A place to visit, no doubt.

  • The possibility of visiting the wall listening to an audio that you are explaining the history makes it even more interesting. Very highly recommended
