The Four Posts, Avila

(4.4/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Erected in 1556 just outside Avila, The Four Posts is a curious-looking shrine with a cross erected in the center. It marks the spot where seven-year-old Saint Teresa tried to run away to seek martyrdom in battle with the Moors. Her uncle, Francisco, stopped her and made her return to the city. The monument is set in a private field with no parking lots nearby, so you will have to walk there. You will also be rewarded with a great view of the city and its medieval walls. • Absolutely essential to go to this place in the afternoon, which is when the wall looks better and better for photographs. Watch the sunset is magnificent.
