Basilica de San Vicente, Avila

(4.5/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Just outside the walls of Avila, Basilica de San Vicente is a 12th-century Romanesque church with notable Gothic architecture. The basilica sits on the site where three Christian martyrs were killed after their refusal to worship pagan gods. Don’t miss the intricate cloisters along the side of the church and the altar. The stones used in the interior are eye-catching, marked with a red coloration that comes from iron. Be sure to see the tomb of Saint Vincent, which is sculpted to depict the story of his torture and execution. • Very convenient Church for Sunday mass. Right outside the wall and next to the information center. Very peaceful experience.
  • Unique and beautiful piece of Castilian Romanesque church. Don't forget to visit the interior. You will be delighted by the shades of yellow and red of the stones and the cleanness of the stone arches and vaults. The transept crossing is a jewel in it's simplicity.
  • Would like to go again in flesh
