Basilica de San Vicente, Avila
(4.5/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Just outside the walls of Avila, Basilica de San Vicente is a 12th-century Romanesque church with notable Gothic architecture. The basilica sits on the site where three Christian martyrs were killed after their refusal to worship pagan gods. Don’t miss the intricate cloisters along the side of the church and the altar. The stones used in the interior are eye-catching, marked with a red coloration that comes from iron. Be sure to see the tomb of Saint Vincent, which is sculpted to depict the story of his torture and execution. • The guide told us that its construction began in the 12TH century, apparently by the same master who built the Cathedral. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Ávila. It is Romanesque though we can find elements of other styles. Inside we can see the Cenotaph of Holy brothers martyrs, he is a funerary monument in honor of 3 brothers, Vicente, Sabina and Cristeta, who were martyred in the 4TH century, in stone and polychrome and in perfect condition. It is the great model of the Romanesque in Avila and neat proportions make it a unique building of the Romanesque Hispanic. It is outside the walls, we find it out the door of San Vicente. It was declared a national monument in 1923. Inside, to the same outside its architecture is very beautiful.

  • Probably the most beautiful Romanesque church of Avila with the typical color of its stones. a tomb of saint inside to see. It should be noted that many Romanesque churches of Avila are classified by UNESCO

  • Very convenient Church for Sunday mass. Right outside the wall and next to the information center. Very peaceful experience.
  • Unique and beautiful piece of Castilian Romanesque church. Don't forget to visit the interior. You will be delighted by the shades of yellow and red of the stones and the cleanness of the stone arches and vaults. The transept crossing is a jewel in it's simplicity.
  • Would like to go again in flesh
  • Fantastic. The Cenotaph is a Romanesque European art jewellery. €2.30 with audioguide included.
