Castillo de Loarre, Aragon
Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Described by UNESCO as "undoubtably the best castle in all of Aragon," Castillo de Loarre held a strategic position on the frontier between Christian and Muslim lands. Built largely during the 11th and 12th centuries, the castle is very well-preserved, and underwent major restorations in the 20th century. Explore its large walls, numerous towers, and enclosed Church of San Pedro. Of its three towers, the "Tower of the Queen" is particularly noteworthy for its set of twin-arched windows, which have been attributed to Lombard and Mozarabic architectural forms. Film buffs might recognize the castle from its appearance in the 2005 epic "Kingdom of Heaven." Make Castillo de Loarre a part of your Yeste vacation plans using our Yeste vacation route planner.
