  • A fortress of Islamic origin, of the 11th and 12th centuries, which is located on a steep hill overlooking the town and with favourable conditions to control the route of the Guadalentin Valley stands in the Hill of the castle of Alhama de Murcia. The Castle formed part of the fortifications of border with the Kingdom of Granada, to the South, and with the Aragon, to the North. The fortress is divided into two distinct areas: a space for political and military; and the other destined to shelter and residence of the population. Highlights the keep with fixed full and decorative paintings in its interior. Through the archaeological remains found in the Castle, has been documented stages of Muslim era until the middle of the 13th century. In the last third of the 14th century, the Castle and the town of Alhama became part as Manor of Fajardo family, together with other towns of the Region. After the conquest of Granada, the Castle ceased to be a fortress of border of the Valley and was gradually being abandoned, begun the process of deterioration with the passage of the centuries. TIME of possible Roman origin, the current remains date back to the middle ages from the s. s. 11th and 15th. USE old fortress schema can not be visited, except in archaeological Conference. ACCESS is in the process of restoration, so it is not recommended access, although this can be done from old square until the first walled enclosure. GUIDES the Department of culture periodically organizes guided tours with archaeologists who explain their origin, history and restoration work being carried out.
