Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Tarragona / Costa Dorada / Alt Camp / Aiguamurcia / Reial Monestir De Santes Creus
Situated in Catalonia's wine-producing region of Alt Camp, Reial Monestir De Santes Creus is a representative example of Cistercian architecture. Built and expanded upon from the 12th to the 18th centuries, the monastery served as the largest and most influential monastic domains of the Kingdom of Aragon until the Cistercians abandoned the building in 1825. Today you can visit the Gothic-style church, the Romanesque cloister, the chapter house and dormitory, and the royal tombs of monarchs who took part in the conquest of Majorca. You can also learn more about the monastery's history and the Cistercian way of life through the on-site audiovisual "The Cistercian World." Visible from the road the Monastery seems to be the whole village! Novel before being Cistercian .. The wealth of the region favoured the advent of the Aragonese by the Reconquista, as evidenced by the grandeur of the site and the royal mausoleums. First with the group entrance for the 3 monasteries, we are entitled to an audioguide in French kindly proposed to the reception. Well documented and well interpreted, it encourages discovery ... We enter the village and then into the compound with remarkable restorations and traces of buildings that have now disappeared. Then the laity party and finally we arrive in the cloister and "his masterful sink". Well arrowed, it is necessary to take the time to raise your nose for the details of the capitals, understand the evolution of the building with the Romanesque remains and look down to discover the signage of the time engraved in stone ... Coming out very satisfied, the shop offers beautiful souvenirs ...

From the long access courtyard you come across the small Romanesque cloister, remnant of an older Hospital (from which today you access the local town hall). The most beautiful part is the Gothic cloister, which harmoniously inserts the hexagonal structure of the oldest Romanesque washhouse. Curious the rear cloister with the massive Romanesque structures, and equally massive the Romanesque aisles of the church, in stark contrast to the Gothic lightness of the two magnificent royal tombs contained in it. Also beautiful is the Romanesque structure (this time very slender, of Gothic proportions) of the courtyard and staircase of the small royal palace included in the monastery. The whole visit took place in total solitude, a situation appreciated by the photographer, but it is certainly a pity that such a valuable monument is no longer visited.

Very nice visit thanks to the audio-guide that allows a smooth visit and allowed even some digressions. Deserves a detour, as a famous guide would say.
Beautiful monastary. Even if it's closed its worth a visit as the outside is very pretty as well. (We did not go in)
Nice audio-visual presentation of the monastery. Well preserved, nice staff at the entrance. Interesting tour.
Nice, calm place, beautiful area.
This is an old monastery that few tourists visit. We saw Keanu Reeves visiting the monastery as well, I assume for some personal quiet time.
Lovely Cistercian monastery with tombs Aragon royals and restored cloisters. Food and drink in local cafes and bars. Concessions for young and less young
