Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.

  • This is a lovely plaza, located just next to the beautiful city hall. However, there was absolutely nothing going on in the plaza during our visit, which was a shame.  more »
  • The Plaza itself is nothing special, what makes this place is there is always something going on. Markets, shows, exhibitions. If you are around drop in and see what is going on today.  more »
  • The area is quite big which located in front of Seoul City Hall. You can visit easily by subway and get off at City Hall station. Surrounded with Seoul City Hall, Seoul Metropolitan Library, Deoksugun...  more »

  • A nice open public square (plaza) and a park to walk around and visit the city hall building. Well connected by public transport (including underground metro) from almost anywhere in Seoul. There was a nice fair and open air music festival when I visited in early winter.
  • Seoul plaza is a landmark in Seoul. Unfortunately that is not because the plaza itself has much to offer. It serves merely as a viewing spot for the buildings surrounding it. The plaza occasionally plays host to small markets and fairs, but for most of the year it is just an open space with some artificial grass on it. One highlight is the skating rink that is erected during winter. It's a fun day out with your better half, but do watch out for falling noobs and guys who feel the need to zip around and show off.
  • Always something going on on this place. Social protest, political rally, go and find out how Koreans fight for their opinion!
  • It is the place to go if you want to protest. Labor strikes, anti-President Park protest, protest for the president, anti-gay protest, pro-Christianity protest, etc. Occasionally they host cultural events every now and then
  • The frequent site of Korean cultural festivals, celebrations, soccer-viewing parties, and protests alike. Sits directly in front of city hall and in some ways is the "center" of Seoul (a designation perhaps shared with Gwanghwamun square, just a few minutes walk north of there)
