4.3
#10 of 89 in Museums in Seoul
Seodaemun Prison History Hall document's the building's role as a tool of political repression, first under the Japanses colonial regime and then under numerous Korean dictatorships. Take a guided tour of the facility, which dates to 1908, to visit former cell blocks and various exhibits, such as realistic recreations of the torture methods once used within the walls there. In a separate building, you can journey through the prisoner’s experience, from torture to court appearance and finally executioner's chair. Outside, a thought-provoking memorial lists the names of those known to have died at the prison as well as those whose names are still unknown. • Seodaemun prison is feels a long, desolate distance but just need to visit. Keep as the prison was imprisoned there, and people have a place to be displayed as a straight couple trips educational.

  • Seodaemun prison, where you can feel the pain in Korea for the present. Mt. but he suffered the pain of the nation in the age column doctors know. In the early 19th century building form is historical.

  • This place is underrated by tourists. It's not even advertised on travel guides. But I think it's very educational and interesting. The entrance tickets are cheap so give it a try! :)
  • The history here is well preserved. The facilities are constantly being updated and fixed. There are four languages for everything (Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese), so you're sure to be able to understand. It's a powerful experience!
  • A very interesting place to visit to understand how the men and women of korea fought for their independence against the Japanese. Seeing the different ways that they were tortured and the conditions of their imprisonment, one can only feel a sense of sympathy yet in awe of how they survived the war. Definitely one of our top favorite visits after touring Korea twice. If there were more English translations, I'll have given it 5 stars.
  • Interesting to grasp what japonese occupation could look like. However only few content was translated. Many school trip make the place more lively
  • Hisotrical place where korean patriots suffered from the persecution of Japanese colonization! We need to remember the sacrifice and endurance of Korean ancestors!

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
