Namdemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate), Seoul

(3.8/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Surrounded by busy traffic and modern high rises in the middle of a major intersection, Namdemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate) stands alone defiantly, still looking powerful and impressive. Completed in 1398 as one of the eight great gates of Seoul, this southern gate is now the only surviving of the three original gates, once part of a large 18.2 km (11.3 mi) walls surrounding the city. Occasionally, you can observe changing of the guard ceremonies in colorful costumes, as well as martial arts exhibitions outside the gate. • It is a beautiful door of the closed City Site on Monday. A photo just this place is located in the city center and will be part of your tour of one of your walks

  • We used this gate more of a landmark to find our hotel. It was very pretty all lit up at night. The surrounding small park closes at 6pm though.  more »
  • Big across the road, I walked from the hotel was lit up. Buildings suddenly appeared and enjoyed the view. Markets were now from here.

  • The gorgeous and glorious Gates coming to this case you might consider getting into the traffic trying to get a better picture especially at night helps alleviate be advertisements brightly-lit behind it. Lots of yesteryear mandatory to check it out. Market on the corner. Underground markets song every socioeconomic class on The Closer you get to the bank of Korea what are the markets get and the shopping and also the more expensive it becomes which is correlates with quality which increases dramatically and value decreases exponentially. The GS 25 and the 7-Eleven directly across from it have some of the most helpful English speaking staff you'll ever meet at any convenience store.
  • Good to see it. But it's a gate with no other amenities. Go around the gate to market. Market s are full of suprises
  • Its an interesting spot to stop at for a moment but don't plan to make it an all day thing. I would suggest hitting up Namdaemun market to make it worth the trip.
  • Beautiful structure when you see it up close. Definitely worth stopping here to check it out.
  • A beautiful site to visit if you love history or art! It's right next to a large market and plenty of restaurants and coffee shops too.
