Namdemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate), Seoul

3.9
Surrounded by busy traffic and modern high rises in the middle of a major intersection, Namdemun Gate (Sungnyemun Gate) stands alone defiantly, still looking powerful and impressive. Completed in 1398 as one of the eight great gates of Seoul, this southern gate is now the only surviving of the three original gates, once part of a large 18.2 km (11.3 mi) walls surrounding the city. Occasionally, you can observe changing of the guard ceremonies in colorful costumes, as well as martial arts exhibitions outside the gate. • We went there on our first day in Seoul. A great historical site to see...you can see the guards & take photo with them. Very near to the famous Namdaemun Market. You can walk across the street or tak...  more »
  • Seoul City Hall at the side of the Namdaemun Gate at night is cool. A few years ago, the fire is burning close to look at restoring your Schnauzer

  • This historical site is easy to find as it is located in the cross section of a main road. It is also next the popular Namdaemun Market. There is nothing much to see and explore. I would suggest a 30 ...  more »

  • Nice anchor to the area. Congrats with modern buildings in the area. Gives nice feeling of the Korean history.
  • There's the Namdaemun market near here, where i visit often to buy various health supplements and goods. People in ancient Chosun costumes march with music sometimes a day near Namdaemun and the same name market.
  • Nice place to get a awesome pic of your family. Well managed timwtable and interesting performance with traditional march.
  • Located right next to Myeong Dong downtown and Namdemun market makes this a very worthwhile destination. The ancient gate, set against a backdrop of modern glass buildings is quite a sight.
  • Historic and Beautiful landmark. It's a great contrast between the medieval ancient gate and the very modern and vibrant city and building that surrounds the area. Must visit whenever you are in the area visiting Namdaemun Market. Great photo I'm.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
