Heunginjimun, Seoul

3.5
#12 of 47 in Historic Sites in Seoul
Observe one of the landmark entrances of the old citadel, Heunginjimun--a defensive gate designed to protect the important government compound within. First constructed in 1396, the gate underwent reconstruction in 1869. It displays many architectural and design hallmarks of the late Joseon period, including a semicircular outer wall, known as an ongseong, which provides extra protection. The only gate of the city's eight to have this feature, the edifice also boasts heavily decorated brackets supporting the hipped roof on each of its two floors. The door is imposing with its circular wall... but she is visibly overwhelmed by traffic, very important in this area of Seoul. D elsewhere to take pictures not d option but to position itself at the various fires that surround. A place of contrast 3 centuries ago... he had to go under l. ŒIL of the guardians sparingly... now such cars electrons surround the tower... I think she must be dreaming to find quiet (as the Coliseum in Rome...)

This gate is beautiful. Not much more to say actually. It is well preserved and looks good. But surrounded by modern buildings. Well worth passing by and take some pics of it.  more »

Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun Gate) was the gate of the outer wall of Seoul Fortress among eight gates. It's close to Dongdaemun market.

Location for many of Koreas typical events located in front of it. Other than looks there is not much to do here, luckily right next to it is many other famous locations such as insadong, village, and national muesuem

One of the gates of the former Seoul city wall. Other than the gate and a bit of wall there isn't too much else to see the visit will be quick. Worth a quick detour from dongdaemun.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
