Gwangjang Market, Seoul

4.1
#16 of 706 in Things to do in Seoul
Eat your heart out at Gwangjang Market, a bustling destination offering a huge array of classic Korean fare and goods. Wander this thriving street market, one of the largest in the country, and browse the 5,000-plus shops and storefronts bursting with food grills, clothing collections, and more. Pick up some handicrafts as a memento, stock up on traditional herbs and medicines, or even take your pick from an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. Despite all of these goods on offer, it's the freshly prepared meals that reigns supreme here. Make sure you taste the market's premier dish, a savory mung-bean pancake known as "bindaettok." Alternatively, you can opt for other well-known dishes, such as "bibimbap" (a rice bowl filled with meat and vegetables) or "mayak gimbap" (rice rolls with seaweed). • Family trip to stay at the Banyan tree and the four-minute bursts Lew bindaetteok and closing the door, you could not use the meat well referred to as huge crowds is great

  • We took the Seoul Metro to Jongno 5-ga Station. From there it's about a 5min walk to Gwangjang Market. The market has clothes and food merchants - we arrived just before lunchtime which enabled us to ...  more »
  • In the old days you would like to have a place like this in Seoul, feeling the market-as long as the celebrity drug rice flavored with bindaetteok. I'm a fun to watch.

  • Talk about an experience! Look, take it from someone who doesn't enjoy crowds... this is just one of those places you have to experience to appreciate. Granted I also have the advantage of being nearly 6'6" tall, so that helped. ;-) Besides, it was amazing how once you got out of the main passage ways, how quickly you can find yourself in a nearly deserted section of the market. The sheer amount and variety of stuff for sale is always an amazing thing at places like this. Visiting in the middle of December when it was 20* wasn't ideal, but at least I was easily able to buy a warm hat. Looking forward to seeing more of this place again on a future trip!
  • Good local and traditional market where there are lots of things to buy and try. Buy some local products and utensils with their unique design. Try local food like alive squids, toppokki, fish balls and many more. Wash everything down with fresh fruit smoothies. You can spend half day sightseeing around this huge market.
  • I went mainly for food hunting. I found several dishes that were new to me as a Korean. Prices are marked clearly and they won't rip you off. The used clothes market vendors are generally young people interested in fashion and will recommend you good styles. They will grab you with flattering compliments so be aware. It's big so be caredul not to get lost. There are many markets in and around; street food around here is pretty good too.
  • One of the traditional markets in Seoul which you shouldn't miss when you're in the area. It has a lot of stalls selling different stuff such as souvenirs, cloths, and especially food. Although it may seem overwhelming at first because it has different stalls selling the same food, it's a memorable experience nonetheless.
  • Must to visit for tourist to see a real local market. You will see a local food how Korean eat. Good Food and variety.
