Gwangjang Market, Seoul

4.1
#16 of 706 in Things to do in Seoul
Eat your heart out at Gwangjang Market, a bustling destination offering a huge array of classic Korean fare and goods. Wander this thriving street market, one of the largest in the country, and browse the 5,000-plus shops and storefronts bursting with food grills, clothing collections, and more. Pick up some handicrafts as a memento, stock up on traditional herbs and medicines, or even take your pick from an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. Despite all of these goods on offer, it's the freshly prepared meals that reigns supreme here. Make sure you taste the market's premier dish, a savory mung-bean pancake known as "bindaettok." Alternatively, you can opt for other well-known dishes, such as "bibimbap" (a rice bowl filled with meat and vegetables) or "mayak gimbap" (rice rolls with seaweed). • This is just one of those MUST DO items. A great selection of local foods prepared right in front of you. There are at least 100 vendors here with a great array of food, items and treats.  more »

  • Talk about an experience! Look, take it from someone who doesn't enjoy crowds... this is just one of those places you have to experience to appreciate. Granted I also have the advantage of being nearly 6'6" tall, so that helped. ;-) Besides, it was amazing how once you got out of the main passage ways, how quickly you can find yourself in a nearly deserted section of the market. The sheer amount and variety of stuff for sale is always an amazing thing at places like this. Visiting in the middle of December when it was 20* wasn't ideal, but at least I was easily able to buy a warm hat. Looking forward to seeing more of this place again on a future trip!
  • This place was so energectic and fun. If you want to try some good ole traditional Korean dishes, do not hesitate. It really was a very fulfilling experience for me. Yeah, it is a street market in a way, and it is crowded but once you are in it, the whole ride is a fun ride. Just GO and EXPLORE !
  • Too many stalls selling the same food items and you don't know which ones are better than the other. But it is exciting to walk through the market and just be amazed by the variety of food the stalls offer. It is definitely a tourist must go spot in Seoul
  • It's always very crowded and very loud. But this place pretty much has everything! The food is especially worth trying! It's also amazingly cheap! You can order something and get it to go. However, you can also just sit down at the food stalls, or some of the shops have indoor seating areas. It's all very convenient.
  • Great market to sample the street foods of Korea. Tourists guides are around to guide tourists where ever you go. Must try the rice cakes and mini kimbap! Come with a group of friends to try more variety ! A most visit for those visiting Seoul! Tho I have to say variety could be better!
