Gwangjang Market, Seoul

4.1
#16 of 534 in Things to do in Seoul
Eat your heart out at Gwangjang Market, a bustling destination offering a huge array of classic Korean fare and goods. Wander this thriving street market, one of the largest in the country, and browse the 5,000-plus shops and storefronts bursting with food grills, clothing collections, and more. Pick up some handicrafts as a memento, stock up on traditional herbs and medicines, or even take your pick from an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. Despite all of these goods on offer, it's the freshly prepared meals that reigns supreme here. Make sure you taste the market's premier dish, a savory mung-bean pancake known as "bindaettok." Alternatively, you can opt for other well-known dishes, such as "bibimbap" (a rice bowl filled with meat and vegetables) or "mayak gimbap" (rice rolls with seaweed). • You can also enjoy shopping, many stalls and shops, you can eat a lot. I'd better go to there while walking around eating and drinking are not at dinner time.

  • More, there are plenty of food shop that sells fruit and vegetables, say the market, so the image that there is. Vigour is people, people, people who go out at night, and the State is. Kin pub tradition and many are sold on the street. Restaurant I've eaten at the end money is paid at once. I think I have a lot of different things, so we hope you enjoy. It is almost a payment in cash.

  • Love these tight spots with everything you need in front of you. Reasonable prices, but I wouldn't consider it cheap. Very easy and all in one place!
  • One of the most unique places I've visited in Seoul. I thought this was where the locals shop and get food but was informed by my Seoul friends that the market is more touristy than anything. Still, it was a very interesting experience to see the variety of foods they offer at the market. Mind you the aroma is quite pungent and be sure to arrive early before the tourists begin to flood in
  • the AC inside the market building is good but as for open market, not sure the safety of the food during summer time. Wish everyone a happy and safe visit.
  • We enjoyed our last day dinner at Gwangjang market. Everything similar same to each stalls. The ajuma very friendly & taste was just so so for us. Come & get experience sitting there with local native.
  • My favorite traditional market for street food and atmosphere. Definitely try the bindaeduk and makgeoli on a rainy day.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
