Gwangjang Market, Seoul

4.1
#16 of 520 in Things to do in Seoul
Eat your heart out at Gwangjang Market, a bustling destination offering a huge array of classic Korean fare and goods. Wander this thriving street market, one of the largest in the country, and browse the 5,000-plus shops and storefronts bursting with food grills, clothing collections, and more. Pick up some handicrafts as a memento, stock up on traditional herbs and medicines, or even take your pick from an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. Despite all of these goods on offer, it's the freshly prepared meals that reigns supreme here. Make sure you taste the market's premier dish, a savory mung-bean pancake known as "bindaettok." Alternatively, you can opt for other well-known dishes, such as "bibimbap" (a rice bowl filled with meat and vegetables) or "mayak gimbap" (rice rolls with seaweed). • There were so many stalls to choose from, but honestly they all look about the same. We choose 2 stall that had some locals sitting down, and ordered quite a few dishes including blood sausage, narcot...  more »
  • The food options are bountiful market as much as it is hard to explore here. Lined with stalls in the market towards the center of the dining room (?) Do not type in the. There are also a restaurant famous for its tv and often came out in the market and the bustling market atmosphere and mood is also up in the meantime where overeating.

  • It's always very crowded and very loud. But this place pretty much has everything! The food is especially worth trying! It's also amazingly cheap! You can order something and get it to go. However, you can also just sit down at the food stalls, or some of the shops have indoor seating areas. It's all very convenient.
  • Excellent joint for a local food scene. I was there in early December so it was cold but not freezing, I don't know if that's the reason it wasn't touristy at all but I really felt like I was in the middle of a local marketplace. The street food was amazing, and the merchants there doesn't rip us off at all, unlike most of the similar tourist sites in other cities. Top 5 to-do if you like to explore a local food experience.
  • We went here at night to try out the food. What I must say is the food here is DEVINE! You can try marinated pork skin, Korean sundae, chicken feet skin and of course: raw beef with octopus! It wasn’t really my thing but I did enjoyed it. Even though at first it looked kinda disturbing with the moving octopus... but it does taste really exotic lol. The market at night is really vibrant, lots of groups of young people come here to hang around. Really nice vibe and experience. This is one of the most amazing places I’ve been to in my Korea trip!
  • Traditional clothes, snacks, and cuisine are available in Kwangjang Market. The people were friendly to foreigners. Some of them even tried to speak in our language! If you're lucky, you can even get special discount or complementary items here.
  • Lots of textile and clothing shops. In the middle there are many food stalls offering snacks like mung beans pancake, dumpling soup and noodles and pan fried rice cake. I got one if those at 1,500W and it was delicious. This is a good place to wander around for a hour or two.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
