Gwanghwamun Gate, Seoul

(4.3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Admire Gwanghwamun Gate, the main entrance to Gyeongbokgung palace and a symbol of the long-reigning Joseon dynasty. Originally built in 1395, the gate was destroyed numerous times, most notably during Japanese invasions and in the Korean War. It has been painstakingly reconstructed from 2006 to 2010, in an effort to make it closely resemble the original. When visiting the gate, you can observe the ceremonial changing of the royal guards, a ritual performed hourly between 10 am and 3 pm. With our custom trip planner, Seoul attractions like Gwanghwamun Gate can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • I visited the gate at a time there was no changing of guards. It is still beautiful and picturesque. This is a beautiful site to take in together with the Square that is nearby.

  • The door of the principal palace is located in the city center. Surrounded of skyscrapers, and people wearing hanbok (traditional costume) it is a perfect combination of traditions and modern culture. It is highly recommended to visit that area if you are visiting Seoul.
  • The main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace which has stood still for hundreds of years but torn down during the japanese colonial rule. Rebuilt several times to make what it used to be in the ancient times.
  • Time your visit do that you can catch the timing of changing of guards ceremony. Every hour sharp from 10am onwards till 4pm everyday except Tuesday. You can take photo with the guards but can't touch them.
  • Very interesting place, you might walk all the way to City Hall and lotte hotel
