Monument Historic Site
Admire Gwanghwamun Gate, the main entrance to Gyeongbokgung palace and a symbol of the long-reigning Joseon dynasty. Originally built in 1395, the gate was destroyed numerous times, most notably during Japanese invasions and in the Korean War. It has been painstakingly reconstructed from 2006 to 2010, in an effort to make it closely resemble the original. When visiting the gate, you can observe the ceremonial changing of the royal guards, a ritual performed hourly between 10 am and 3 pm. With our custom trip planner, Seoul attractions like Gwanghwamun Gate can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Great place to take photos but that's about it. However, should come to this place to take pictures as it is one of the popular places to take photos.  more »
  • Right next to the market, so thought we'd have a look. We were fortunate to see a changing of the guards: very formal, yet fascinating, and no crowds. Awe inspiring.  more »
  • Nice place which shows you the history of the Korea like old days and really nice to visit all the time  more »

  • Great place to visit. As you approach the gate from the south, it looks majestic with the mountains in the background. Don't forget to look up and enjoy the colorful drawings as you walk through the gate.
  • Gwanghwamun is the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Its name literally means "may the light of enlightenment blanket the world". The Gwanghwamun Square in front of it, is where the bronze statue of the King Sejong the Great is at. To the left of the square is the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, one of Seoul's biggest arts and culture complexes. You can reach here by travelling Line 5 on Subway, and use Exit 5 of Gwanghwamun Station.
  • Must visit attraction in Seoul. The building was fabulous. We visited this place during the spring and there are many Koreans wore their traditional costume, lovely
  • It looks beautiful. Pictures worth taking when wearing hankbok
  • The palace was well worth the visit. It spoiled me with its beautiful and refreshing colour combinations. Also the young people wearing traditional korean cloths made the whole experience even more charming.
