Gwanghwamun Gate, Seoul

4.3
#6 of 47 in Historic Sites in Seoul
Monument Historic Site
Admire Gwanghwamun Gate, the main entrance to Gyeongbokgung palace and a symbol of the long-reigning Joseon dynasty. Originally built in 1395, the gate was destroyed numerous times, most notably during Japanese invasions and in the Korean War. It has been painstakingly reconstructed from 2006 to 2010, in an effort to make it closely resemble the original. When visiting the gate, you can observe the ceremonial changing of the royal guards, a ritual performed hourly between 10 am and 3 pm. With our custom trip planner, Seoul attractions like Gwanghwamun Gate can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Must-visit place to see the history of Korea and world heritage. This gate is the biggest one among the palaces in Seoul. Also you can enjoy Gyeongbokgung palace inside. There is royal gurad change ceremony everyday, you can see the Korean style of guard, costums and process. Strongly recommend.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
