Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul

#17 of 534 in Things to do in Seoul
Resembling a giant spaceship docked in a field of fake white roses, Dongdaemun Design Plaza hosts fashion design shops, a multipurpose convention hall, a history museum, and eateries. A combination of classy shopping mall and suave conference center set in the middle of Dongdaemun fashion district, this modern landmark of Seoul gets an extra accent from thousands of glowing LED lights along its sloping curves. You can also explore some 2,575 artifacts in the restored parts of a fortress excavated during construction works. The plaza is well-connected, with a subway station just underneath. A visit to Dongdaemun Design Plaza represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Seoul day trip planning website to plot your vacation.

  • It is a very popular place, but it is more saying that it rally is. Has some cool places but not enough for a big place. I’ll doble think if I go there again.  more »
  • In some restaurants in the basement, to be useful. Popular shops in Seoul. Shop closes at 9 pm because time is required to review. So I lit up at night or in the evening walk is recommended.

  • Coming here at night was spectacular. The light displays and night markets are something to look out for. There are some design exhibitions that you can visit too. Never a boring time there.
  • A must see building if u are in Seoul. It's one of the last pieces of work by Zaha HADID. Each piece of external aluminum cladding is unique in geometry and computer aided then pressed to fit. At night, the building looks like the Star Trek Enterprise. Interior spaces are big and detailing retains the character of the building. Don't miss the ramps and circulation stairs, they are excellent photo opportunities. Designer shops are great to look at too!
  • It's a fancy building. I happened to joined a farmers' market in the square and had a great time there. It hosts many exhibitions as well but I don't have enough time to take a look. The store in DDP are also worth a look.
  • One of landmarks in Seoul. The structure itself draw another beauty of architecture. Many spaces in the building are used for design, fashion and art exhibitions. The building shows its vibrant features in both day and night time. The building is directly connected to the subway station, which is perfectly convenient. Definitely recommend for everyone for visiting this impressive Design Center.
  • It's too... kind of empty. there are too much useless AREAS between works and works. And lack of restaurants is also a big problem. If you want to eat something OK, you have to walk about 10~15 minutes. but sometimes, they held gorgeous exhibitions, which means you might be the lucky visitor.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.
