Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul

4.0
#9 of 106 in Sightseeing in Seoul
Landmark Tourist Spot
Resembling a giant spaceship docked in a field of fake white roses, Dongdaemun Design Plaza hosts fashion design shops, a multipurpose convention hall, a history museum, and eateries. A combination of classy shopping mall and suave conference center set in the middle of Dongdaemun fashion district, this modern landmark of Seoul gets an extra accent from thousands of glowing LED lights along its sloping curves. You can also explore some 2,575 artifacts in the restored parts of a fortress excavated during construction works. The plaza is well-connected, with a subway station just underneath. Dongdaemun Design Plaza is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Seoul Edition.

Where to stay in Seoul

The Seoul metropolitan area has two districts especially appealing to backpackers--Jongno just northeast of the city, and Hongdae to the west. Both offer good shopping and dining, as well as easy transport links to the rest of the city. Mid-range options may prove difficult to find in peak season (July to August), unless you don't mind staying at a traditional hanok guesthouse, where loads of character make up for any lack of amenities. Finally, a range of top-end hotels with an impressive list of services and facilities lie scattered around the city.

  • There's nothing special about this place. If you pay extra for the special exhibition that you want to go, then maybe it's worth it. Other than that it's just the building. Nothing else.  more »
  • In my opinion this place is shopping heaven.i cant find any clothes in calgary canada where i live. Dongdaemoon is cheaper than calgary for better design clothes. I can shop all day in dongdaemoon sin...  more »
  • The DDP (Dream Design Play/Dongdaemun Design Plaza) is humongous in its entirety. It's also a great place for people who appreciate modern art and architecture, as the DDP holds about 4 floors worth o...  more »

  • Coming here at night was spectacular. The light displays and night markets are something to look out for. There are some design exhibitions that you can visit too. Never a boring time there.
  • A must see building if u are in Seoul. It's one of the last pieces of work by Zaha HADID. Each piece of external aluminum cladding is unique in geometry and computer aided then pressed to fit. At night, the building looks like the Star Trek Enterprise. Interior spaces are big and detailing retains the character of the building. Don't miss the ramps and circulation stairs, they are excellent photo opportunities. Designer shops are great to look at too!
  • It's a fancy building. I happened to joined a farmers' market in the square and had a great time there. It hosts many exhibitions as well but I don't have enough time to take a look. The store in DDP are also worth a look.
  • One of landmarks in Seoul. The structure itself draw another beauty of architecture. Many spaces in the building are used for design, fashion and art exhibitions. The building shows its vibrant features in both day and night time. The building is directly connected to the subway station, which is perfectly convenient. Definitely recommend for everyone for visiting this impressive Design Center.
  • It's too... kind of empty. there are too much useless AREAS between works and works. And lack of restaurants is also a big problem. If you want to eat something OK, you have to walk about 10~15 minutes. but sometimes, they held gorgeous exhibitions, which means you might be the lucky visitor.
