Seokguram Grotto, Gyeongju

(3.5/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Symbolizing a spiritual journey into Nirvana, Seokguram Grotto treasures forty figures representing Buddhist principles and teachings. Nestled in the hills and made of hundreds of granite stones, the 8th-century cave temple is the only intact structure surviving from the Silla era and a World Heritage Site. Pass a narrow corridor lined with bas-reliefs of guardian deities, which leads from a rectangular antechamber into the main rotunda. Once there, take a moment to appreciate the 3.3 m ( ft) tall statue of Buddha, seated on a pedestal and smiling generously. With our custom trip planner, Gyeongju attractions like Seokguram Grotto can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Amazing views and temples around. We arrived and it was already closed, but we could see the views and the front of it and the one at the entrance. Pretty good. Worthy it and free of charge  more »
  • There Ray sent to watch the Sunrise, or to climb to the top. Just see the Buddha, which is hidden behind the glass in the cave, not very interesting. Before entering the temple can be reached by bus, car. At the entrance-parking. Parked bought delicious persimmons and chestnuts. Grandma fried them right here) I liked it, but I think the sunrise-would be much more interesting.

  • It's a nice walk up to the grotto but the temple itself is a great disappointment. For some reason they decided to completely fence the Buddha off with glass. They say it's for protection but there better ways for preservation and I actually wonder what exactly could happen to a GRANITE statue that is kept under roof?! It shouldn't even be on the UNESCO list since you can't really see it so it's not really available for the humanity.
  • Not worth it! A tourist trap at its finest. Overcharged for everything - including certain areas just to take a picture of the view. Can barely see anything in the cave where the Buddha statue is. Spend your day somewhere else!
  • Beautiful walk to the temple. You see chipmunks everywhere. There are some great views of the mountains and valleys. The grotto was really beautiful and the craftsmanship that went into building it was great.
  • Nice place (you need to walk between 2hours and 25min depending on where you begin). 5000 won to visit it. There is a nice Buddha inside of it (no photo allowed).
  • Little less interesting one of many budhist temples in Korea. Buddha is quite far behind glass wall in badly lighted grotta.
