Cheonmachong, Gyeongju

4.0
#2 of 23 in Historic Sites in Gyeongju
Cheonmachong offers a rare glimpse into a royal tomb. First excavated in 1973, the tomb is supposedly the final resting place of an unknown king of the Silla kingdom from the 5th or 6th century (exact dates undetermined as of yet). While many tombs in the area have undergone excavation, at present, the public may access just one. From outside, the tombs look like mounds of earth, but on the inside of this wood-lined tomb, you’ll discover hundreds of artifacts, many of which are replicas. Burial gifts originally surrounded the tomb, though, many were removed for preservation after excavation. Among the 11,500 artifacts uncovered in the tombs was an incredible gold crown embellished with jade beads. Pleasant place to wander around. You can also hire a bike, electric scooter or various other methods of transportation outside the park to ride around which is quite fun.

Thousand years ago there was a Kingdom in east southern side of Korean peninsula. This is the most famous tomb for a king of 'Silla'.

Where to stay in Gyeongju

With 6 million tourists per year, Gyeongju offers a wide range of accommodations. The area around the Bomun Lake resort has several luxury hotels catering to the needs of Korean tour groups. More moderately priced hotels lie in the downtown area, notably in Nodong-Dong and Noseo-Dong quarters. Near the train station, you can find inexpensive guesthouses (yeoinsuk), motels, and hostels. Family-oriented mid-range hotels tend to cluster just east from the lake, but the tourist-friendly city has accommodations well distributed throughout.
