Beomeosa, Busan

4.4
#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Busan
Pay a visit to Beomeosa on the side of Geumjeongsan mountain, known for its picturesque forest surroundings. Built in 678 CE, the temple complex was destroyed during the Japanese invasions, but rebuilt in the later centuries. Enjoy the relaxing, but strenuous hike up to the temple, where you can relish the spiritual atmosphere, well-maintained gardens, and the scenic mountainside setting, especially picturesque in late spring when the wisterias bloom. Continue the hike to the top of the mountain to see a legendary well where, according to local tales, a fish came down from the heavens to swim, giving the temple its name. • The place is too big, not able to roam around. Just make a brief stop over. Just like other temple. Maybe you will really appreciated the place, if you know its history.  more »

  • I have seen over 10 temples across Seoul and Busan and this is my favourite! It is very authentic and large. Unlike the other temples I have seen, Beomeosa is a true hermitage and is organized like a small town where many monks live and practice. They even offer temple stay, which I regret not doing but I did spend over 6 hours at Beomeosa and took part in a prayer exclusively designated for monks so I am grateful for this opportunity. One of the senior monks made an exception and allowed us to participate in their ceremony, it was very powerful and special! Amazing place to take photos, enjoy in tranquility and experience a true Buddhist lifestyle.
  • It's okay but not exceptional. It's spread out a bit so there's some sincere up hill walking to see parts of it.
  • Beautiful temple and garden surrounding the place. When we visited the space, some maintenance was going on. The place is easily accessible by public transport and there is no need to get a cab if you are in leisurely mood. It's good for people looking for some quiet time.
  • This is one way that Busan preserves its true heritage. Amazing place!
  • Beautiful scenery. Nice temples

Where to stay in Busan

Established as a domestic tourist destination for a long while now, you'll find a good set of accommodations in Busan, a city becoming more and more equipped to cope with its burgeoning international reputation. Around Seomyeon station and slightly further to the northeast lie some of the most established options, with an abundance of hotels, hostels, and guesthouses in this highly commercial district. Head to the Haeundae beach district for a range of beachfront options, and more budget-friendly guesthouses in the side streets that lead away from the beach.
