Trying to be too clever, I went up in the cable car and walked down Platteklip, instead of the other way around, and as could be expected, I saw my backside! It was still an experience to add to all..... more »
Scenic hike up the mountain. It is well marked and well established. I wish people would take their rubbish with them though, we picked up quite a bit. I would not recommend the hike for unfit... more »
This is the most popular route up the mountain by foot and the views are spectacular. Allow a good two hours even if you're reasonably fit and the advice now is to not go up alone but join an... more »
Spending time in nature is absolutely fantastic. Table mountain affords one the opportunity to do exactly that, and from so many different angles. For those hiking enthusiasts who like hiking, Platteklip Gorge is a reasonably easy hike in that there is no hard or serious climbing involved. If you are reasonably fit or if you are willing to take a little longer than the real fitness fanatics out there, then try this one by all means. The different views and plant life both along the way and from the top is absolutely worth the effort. Just a word of caution. If you don't have at least some level of fitness, then you might find this one a little difficult. The gain in elevation versus the distance walked is reasonably steep and for some it might be challenging. One can always take a few rest stops on the way or walk only one way and use the cable car the other. Whichever way you prefer, absolutely worth it. 👍😎
The perfect route for a quick hike up the table mountain. It took us a bit more than a hour to get to the top but it's not a hike for the faint hearted. It is not prettiest hike since it's just a way up and you look down a lot. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it and didn't experience as too hard. Definitely the better option than waiting in line for the cable car.
If you love hiking but have limited time in Cape Town I would recommend skipping hiking Table Mountain and hiking Lions Head instead. I did both in a day and prefered Lions Heads by a lot. This hike is nice but to be honest its a lot of switchbacks in the gorge where there is little view. It's not until you are at the top you get to really enjoy the full view. Also, this might seem like dumb advise but bring water. It says its a 2 and 1/2 hour hike, and it is. I saw some without water and they were sorely regretting it.
Busy route, but lovely scenery especially as you go higher. Route is a little tough for beginners as the stairs and slope can be challenging, but not a difficult hike. The option to use the cable car aids this situation. If you like a quiet hike, this one is not for you as there are usually a lot of tourists and local hikers.
What an experience. Stunning climb this morning. Started at 8am and hiked the route in the early morning mist, keeping things really cool. 1h45min later, we were at the top of Table Mountain. With 3 water breaks and a good 10 min snack break, with my level of fitness ( its okay 😰, the fitness level that is) I thought we did well. A must for any hiker. Its not easy, but it's worth every step and view.
