Trip Planner: Africa / South Africa / Western Cape / Stellenbosch / Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden
Hailed as the country's oldest botanical garden, Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden shelters an enormous collection of both indigenous and introduced plant species. Founded at the beginning of the 20th century, the garden serves an educational purpose and serves both the students and the general public. Look for bonsai trees, ferns, succulents, insectivorous species, and medicinal plants, then head to the visitor center to purchase books, seeds, and various garden-related products or to the restaurant in the middle of the garden. Smaller than Cape Town, but it has its own character and interesting aspects. One of the personnel was so friendly to tell us a lot about the different herbs. There is much more knowledge available... more »
A must visit for the flora-fanatic. Enjoyed a great light lunch - quiche recommended! Enjoyed the serenity of the gardens and the plenty of species to see. A botanical feast!
The R10 entrance is well worth the visit. I love the botanical garden, with all the rare and interesting plants, although there are signs that the Western Cape had a severe drought. There is a beautiful pond and a lovely restaurant, Katjiepiering, to visit as well.
A must visit in Stellenbosch. The atmosphere is calming and the gardens are well kept and beautiful. There is also a lovely restaurant and gift shop inside. I especially enjoyed their bonsai collection.
Absolutely amazing, very possibly the most interesting and diverse display of plant life in Southern Africa. My favourite being the greenhouse for the bright and exotic displays, And the bonsai trees having years of love and work to maintain them, each is fascinating and ringed with history. The very reasonable entrance fee provides hours of fascination as you can walk enthralled by nature's works of art more captivating than any museum. The staff are friendly and passionate, and the place is excellently maintained and cared for. Am absolute must see in Stellenbosch.
Has a very neat selection of bonsai trees in the collection. Small entrance fee but well worth it. This place includes a nice little restaurant with nice coffee
