Oom Samie Se Winkel, Stellenbosch

3.3
#5 of 14 in Shopping in Stellenbosch
Oom Samie Se Winkel represents one of the first trading posts in the area, owned by Oom Samie Volsteedt in 1907 and stocked with goods needed by the settlers of that time. As you enter, you'll breathe in the scent of tobacco and you peruse the aisles that include ostrich eggs and different shapes and colors of leather merchandise. Sample some old-fashioned sweets that were once enjoyed by families in a time gone by. After browsing, recharge your batteries on a bench on the veranda, just like the owner did more than a century ago. • Walking back in time. Anything you can think of to buy. Perfect for tourists. Friendly ladies at the counter. Worth the visit.  more »
  • What an amazing shop. It takes you down memory lane with some of the goodies available to buy. A huge assortment of old and new things to buy, as well as old trusted remedies, sweets and collectables  more »
  • If you are looking for candy I guess it is OK. But everything else is old and tired. Many nicer, more interesting and less expensive shops in town.  more »

  • This eclectic shop is worth the detour. It is an institution in Stellenbosch and one can find some trinkets to take home (everything from food to wine and sea shells). I would recommend going when there aren't too many people. The staff is nice.
  • Interesting if you’re a tourist but a bit boring for the average South African. They have some very old wines which are interesting to look at.
  • Lasted visited in my youth, very little has changed in the quaint store. The pungent smell of drying fish contrasts with the perfumed smells from the room selling health products and soaps. A must see in Stellenbosch.
  • Fun place to visit. Overrated if you google stuff to do in stellenbosch but worth a visit if you are in the area.
  • Nice shop, great variety of items. Unfortunately they clearly cater to the foreign market.
