When gold was discovered in Johannesburg in 1886, thousands of prospectors from all over the world rushed to the newly constructed town. Officials quickly segregated the residential areas, which led to the establishment of the township of Soweto. Today, Soweto houses more than a million people, who have significantly improved the "matchbox" houses of apartheid, and who strive to live a more prosperous life. Places to visit in Soweto include museums, churches, and stadiums, and visitors can also attend a variety of music, wine, and film festivals. During your trip to Soweto, make sure to visit the residences of notable historic figures, such as Nelson Mandela. Our South Africa trip builder app allows you to plan your trip to Soweto and a wealth of other destinations big and small.

Where to stay in Soweto

Soweto now represents a safe and established tourist destination, where bed and breakfast owners eagerly meet their visitors on the main roads and help them reach their accommodations. You can find those guesthouses and bed and breakfasts near the railroad stop between the southeastern Meadowlands and Orlando East neighborhoods, which also serve as excellent starting points for exploring the rest of the township. While budget accommodations dominate the set of choices, if you are up for more luxury, check out the four-star hotel and spa near the Soweto Country Club.
