Create an itinerary including Voortrekker Monument
An imposing granite structure near Pretoria, Voortrekker Monument remains dedicated to the Dutch settlers of the Eastern Cape, whose emigration farther inland became known as the "Great Trek." Finished in 1949, the massive monument was designed by local architect Gerard Moerdijk, while its cornerstone was laid by descendants of Boers who led the migration. Admire the 40 m (130 ft) tall structure, adorned with statues of the Voortrekker leaders, or step inside to view a tapestry with several million stitches, relics from the trek, and the ornately decorated marble frieze. • Spectacular view. Insightful and interesting. Well maintained and clean. Has a nice restaurant on premises that serves local foods. The site also have antelope and other small to medium mammals.

  • We went there as a family with our 9-year old and we were all thoroughly entertained. The monument is in good shape and the gardens well kept. The views are stunning and the museum area below the ground level was very informative. Sundays are the best day of the week as it is not too busy. Well worth a visit.
  • Acknowledgment to the Publisher of this book. Thank you for your contribution to our society. I came here on my first school visit in 1967. Awe inspiring. Now I visit it regularly. Not everyone agrees with what it stands for but the fact of the matter is it remains a part of our history. I take German Guests there regularly and would like to share a book with you that I have in German. Acknowledgement to the Photographer; the Author and the Publisher of this book. The food in the restaurant downstairs was delicious and well prepared. Definitely recommended. By appointments only. Fantastic views from the top.
  • Beautiful south Africa, fantastic place to visit if you want to learn the history of South Africa. It's really kept well and has beautiful views. This is s must to visit in South Africa, Pretoria. Really awesome. Lovely for family friends and people visiting south Africa.
  • A very interesting monument and helpful guides. Plan to spend at least half of the day there as there is so much to learn. The monument is in close proximity to Freedom Park. So you can combine the two. Each is charged separately though. There are scenic views of the the capital, and small game as well.
  • The monument is owned by a private company these days. The area is very well looked after and it was quite surprising to see how such an old monument is still being loved and cared for. We went there on day of reconciliation and there were various food stalls, live music and lots of entertainment. The views from the top of the monument are, as always, spectacular. What was also surprising is that there is now a lift to the top.
