Sani Pass represents a serpentine gravel road climbing from 1,544 m (5,065 ft) to 2,876 m (9,435 ft). Go on a 4x4 tour to explore the pristine natural environment and take photographs of the rugged landscape. Most locals navigate the pass and carry goods on mules and horses, but the authorities may prohibit your journey if they deem your vehicle unsuitable for this demanding drive. This is a rather unique destination a few kilometers from the Sani Pass border post. The Chalets are of a high standard with the management couple providing excellent service. All units are self... more »

Said to climb at an altitude of 2876 metres, the Sani Pass gravel road is very steep and it is said to have claimed many lives because of the difficulty to drive on. Being afraid of heights and sharp.... more »

I don’t know how much of this I can get down but bottom line is drive the Sani pass but it can be very dangerous, have the right vehicle, respect it, take full precautions, go slowly and follow... more »

Its a must do pass in South Africa through to Lesotho. I am not sure they will be able to tar it, it’s been on the cards for 10 years plus now. If they do it will loose its appeal. As it is it’s stunning !
-
Quite possibly the most beautiful place in the world. The valley leading up to the pass is absolutely breathtaking. The road quality of the road up the pass varies greatly but its always worth it
-
Beautiful place and possibly the best view from the pub with the pass covered by snow. Friendly staff at the pub. Some of the best pub snacks.
-
Roadworks make the route a bit more difficult and time consuming. Border crossing process was quick and effortless. Views from the top is awesome and well worth the trip. You do need a 4x4 though as the border control will not allow a 2x4 vehicle to pass.

Remains one of my favourite passes in South Africa. And with the snow, what a bonus ! The building of the new tar road will surely take away the magic of this pass... :(
