Trip Planner: Africa / South Africa / Gauteng / Greater Johannesburg / Johannesburg / Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct
Take a tour of Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, a hilltop precinct that overlooks the downtown area and serves as the home of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Built in the late 19th century by Boer settlers, the complex was used as a prison until 1987--prominent figures like Nelson and Winnie Mandela, as well as Mahatma Gandhi were jailed here. On a tour of the complex, now a museum, you can delve into the country's turbulent history, human rights struggles, and democratic progress. I love this place! It contains a rich south African history and as a law student it has virtually become my second home. I spend most of my time here, mostly in the gallery observing court cases but it caters for everyone. However, today I was at Constitution Hill to attend a legal critical thinking workshop and it was remarkable. If you ever go to Constitution Hill, don't leave without partaking in one of their amazing tours. You will not regret it.
This place is charged with history and significance, I was brought to tears many times during the eloquent guided visit of the Constitutional Court. The attention to detail of the architects into place making and the identity and history of South Africa being celebrated in the Court is mesmerising. I got to enjoy it as an Architect and as temporary resident of SA. The inclusion of all history and the memories of the tangible past, leads to believe that SA is very much directed towards a future even brighter, when acknowledging the power of its people.
A really worthwhile visit. Our tour guide was insightful and worked well with the group of gr 11 students I brought along. The court has a been thoughtfuly designed and the history of the hill is both humbling and stirring. It has been beautifully persevered. South Africans and visitors alike should make a stop here to grow a bit in their own humanity.
This is such an awesome place with so much history and such relevance to SA right now. The Constitutional Court is so awesome. When I did the tour former Chief Justice Albie Sachs spoke and it was fascinating. Such thought went into this and it makes one proud. Thank heavens we have this institution to protect ordinary South Africans.
There is so much legislated evil in South Africa's past. Here's a place which captures part of that but at the same time encapsulates the pinnacles of a new, united nation anchored in constitional rights and freedoms. Great tourism district but also a living history lesson that all locals should see. Gets five stars from me.
