Create an itinerary including The Cradle of Humankind
Explore the elaborate system of limestone caves at The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site just 50 km (31 mi) northwest of Johannesburg. Probably the world's most significant palaeontological site, this protected area covers 470 sq km (180 sq mi), including the location in which the 2.3-million-year-old fossil called "Mrs. Ples" was discovered in the 1940s. Be sure to start or end your tour at the visitor center, where you'll find restaurants, cafes, accommodations, and access to additional activities, like hot air ballooning and horse trails. Most Johannesburg tour operators offer guided excursions to the area--you can also visit it in your own car, if you don't mind driving the short distance from the city. • Maropeng was a great experience! The guide was very good. But some of the exhibitions weren't working. But the vortex tunnel was great and the boat ride.

  • Took us about an hour to get here (we were late) they accommodated us by allowing us to take a later tour that was nice. Everything was good my only problem was there was a small boat ride supposedly....  more

  • A really wonderful experience. The guide was fantastic and the whole experience was informative, exciting and fun for the family. Only down-side I would say is that the interactive displays do look a bit run-down. Hopefully when the pandemic ends they'll be able to do some maintenance. Overall a great day out!
  • A World class facility that was overall an amazing experience. Everyone was extremely helpful, the tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend. Restaurant on site is good but pricey.
  • Due to Lockdown there was no activity
  • Great tranquil place to learn and explore about our origins, taking you back in time. Also quite humbling in the greater scheme of things. Much is yet to be found in Africa. What hidden treasures are patiently waiting to be unearthed within our African soil? I must commend the security guard at the main gate entrance. Very professional, warm and inviting. Great ambassador.
  • This place is such a breath of fresh air. Extremely educational. It was fun learning about African history; even my 5-year-old nephew was intrigued. The tour was excellently done, and all staff members were friendly and helpful from the security guy at the gate, the car guard, and ticket stuff to the tour guide guy. It's something different compared to the usual outings people have. I was just disappointed that in our tour guide slot, we were the only black people, not a train smash. Anyway, I 10/10 recommend visiting Maropeng. Tickets must be booked online, R100 per person, and free for kids under 6 years old.
