Robben Island, Cape Town Central

Visit the World Heritage Site of Robben Island, a spit of land just off the Cape Town coast. The island's main claim to fame is rather unfortunate--it includes the prison in which Nelson Mandela served much of his sentence. Used for isolating political prisoners since the 17th century, the island also housed as a leper colony and a World War II fortress during its history. Take a boat ride to the island to delve into the history of the anti-apartheid movement and see where numerous activists, three of which later became presidents, served out their prison sentences. On a tour of the maximum-security prison, you'll most likely be guided by a former inmate who can offer a glimpse into the grueling experience many suffered here. • This was a bleak place but, like the WW2 Concentration camps, it serves as a reminder to man's inhumanity to man. A great wrong was committed on this island and we must not let such things happen agai...  more »
  • The island is great. After all, a world heritage site. Had pessimistic experience with Get Your Guide online service. Ordered a ticket for the ferry and a hotel pickup. The pickup was fine. Reached th...  more »
  • Both our bus host and former prisoner who guided us were amazing. A great insight to the history of the area and touching discussions by both our wonderful hosts. This is a must do when in Cape Town.  more »

  • This is a must for people interested in history. It's a national monument so don't think to take home a pebble. A former inmate will give a guided tour.
  • Spent a week looking, everyday, from the balcony far away, gaining courage to step Robben Island. When finally did all the history is passed by former prisoners, the empowerment narrative caught me as one of the most powerful experiences at the island. Mr. Mandela cell is other milestone there. The ferry travel to the island itself is gorgeous.
  • I had learned an important history while visiting and it is must visit place to see how Mandela spent 18 years
  • A landmark of history of the South African people. To go you must book tickets online or get from pick and pay. Then you get yo yhe V&A waterftont to board a ferry to the Island. Once there a bus takes you around the island. It's a quaint little place where the wardens of the political prisoners lived and worked. We had a great tour guide. And one of the other tour guides was a prisoner himself. Caught so many feels. That's just life. A good place to learn much about South African freedom fighters..
  • This place is an integral part of South African history, definitely a tourist hotspots and well worth a visit if you haven’t done it, you can catch a ferry from the waterfront and get there in under 40 minutes. Probably a little boring for children, Although it is definitely possible to take the family out for the day
