Lion's Head, Cape Town Central

4.9
Hike up to Lion's Head, a dramatic peak overlooking the city and offering panoramic views of Table Mountain National Park. The 669 m (2,195 ft) tall mountain lies next to the smaller, flat-topped Signal Hill, also known as Lion's Rump. You can reach the top on foot only on a relatively easy, scenic trek from Signal Hill. Although steep, the hike, suitable for children, doesn't present a challenge and will reward you with a picturesque picnic spot and viewpoint. • This place is the best spot in Cape Town to go sightseeing. Views are MUCH better than Table Mountain. Enjoy :)  more »
  • Good excercise, nice views, climbing walls. Suitable for everyone. Must go if in Cape Town. Start your walk from the very bottom, dont use transportatioj  more »
  • We went up by bus and enjoyed the sunset as did hundreds of others. The problem was getting off the hill.Traffic jams and people turning their cars around made the trip down laborious and frustrating.  more »

  • First time hiking was a challenge but started getting use to it and concurred
  • Awesome hike, parking is difficult, all worth it.
  • An amazing experience that needs to be shared with anyone traveling through or in Cape Town. The trail is immaculate, safety is high, and the views are simply stunning. Bring water, mild hiking shoes, and a nice snack to have at the peak. If you can bring a good camera as the views are often wide and expansive, a typical phone camera is unable to truly capture their full beauty.
  • Must do experience in Cape Town
  • We did a sunset hike, started at 5h30pm and got to the top at 7pm in December. We walked on a gravel road for +-1km which was a steady incline and fairly easy to do. After the 1km the hike goes from easy to moderate as you start ascending and slope increases which includes stairs. Certain points have stairs/chains but alternative route is available if scared of heights. The last 250m of the "hike" to the peak becomes a sort of a climb/clamor. There is enough footing but it is quite steep. The view at the top is AMAZING. You do a full rotation around the "lions head" so take a camera/phone to record the views. I would not advise the full ascent to people who have knee/hip issues. Older people who are clumsy and don't have good footing/grip unless you have a walking stick People who have fear of heights. There are a lot of seats on the way up so if at any time you can't go further you will still have a great view and place to rest. Take enough water and maybe a snack. Shade is created by the shadow of the mountain so take a hat and sunblock. Total round trip of hiking excluding resting time 2.5 hours. Distance 4.6km. Elevation 662m.
