Vintgar Gorge, Zgornje Gorje

Must see · Hiking Trail · Nature / Park
Cut deep between two hills overgrown with beech forests, Vintgar Gorge is full of small waterfalls, rapids, and erosion potholes. Cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and mayor of Gorje Jakob Zumer discovered the gorge in 1891. Walk along the tourist path with narrow passages, wooden bridges, and galleries, constructed on the rocks in 1893. Listen to the roar of Radovna River echoing along the 1.6 km (1 mi) long gorge marked at the end by a waterfall plunging 16 m (52 ft). The gorge also features two manmade attractions: an arched stone railway bridge from 1906 and a dam. When you reach the end of the gorge, walk back across the meadows passing St. Catherine's church. • Vintgar Gorge is a beautiful spot to visit, we walked the route (one way due to Covid19). We visited in the morning, it was still quite calm.  more »

  • Another great place worth visiting, near the astonishing lake Bled. Try to get there early in the morning though, as the pathways are very narrow and when it gets crowded it may take too long to walk there. Stunning views and fresh mountain air. Loved it overall, but I should definitely recommend hiking around the Mala Osojnica area above the lake.
  • Absolutely gorgeous. One of my favorite places in Slovenia (which is saying a lot). Bit of advice-- go very early or very late. It is a small, long walkway (I believe about 3 miles round trip). Could be not as dramatic having to dodge people constantly.
  • Amazing location but you need to go early. After reading other reviews we dragged ourselves out of bed with our 3 year old and 9 month old arriving at 7.30am. On the route out it was quiet and we were able to walk at a leisurely pace and stop when wanted to take photos. It's a really beautiful spot and glad we did it. Nice cafe at the end and also a lovely waterfall to see. On the return journey it was getting busy. Narrow paths made difficult by people blocking paths to take photos and some ignorant people barging past people with children. When we arrived back at the car park it was very busy and there were queues for tickets. It was only 10am. I will get very busy after then. Costs €10 each, €1 for children and then it's €5 to park. Go early then enjoy the rest of your day stress free!
  • I visited this park in October and I can assure you that autumn really makes this place shine: astonishing colours and few visitors. Furthermore it's super close to Lake Bled which is also amazing. You can't miss it if you are nearby, the price is totally worth it.
  • Meander through the amazing natural wonder that is Vintgar gorge and admire the pools, jumps and rapids while following the river along its course through the gorge. Allow at least 1h30 to complete the circuit which is easy and mostly flat; proper footwear is recommended. Make sure to remain on the footpath to preserve this site's natural beauty.
