Predjama Castle, Postojna

4.7
Perched on a high, rocky cliff for over 700 years, the unconquerable four levels of Predjama Castle were built within a cave mouth. Cross a drawbridge over a rushing river and visit the restored living quarters, chapel, and dungeon to get an idea of how people once lived here. The castle's most famous resident and the subject of many legends was Erazem Lueger, a 15th-century knight who rebelled against the Austrian emperor. See his hiding place called Erazem's Nook and ascend along Erazem's Tunnel. Do not miss the 16th-century treasure chest uncovered in the cellar in 1991. An observation post offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The castle entered the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest cave castle in the world. • Unique to the place where castle was built (in a cave) and how it was built (one with the rock). When you arrive in front of the impact really is. Excellent audioguide included in ticket and indispensable to listen since the Castle otherwise it would turn in a short time because it's not very big and inside there are few furnishings, and in any case it is interesting to hear the many anecdotes recounted. Two negative points: 1) very expensive tickets (well €15 adults and €8 children, for large families is truly onerous NB: the Miramare Castle in Trieste is free for under 18 years ...); 2) the shop inside very characteristic of wines/honey/various souvenirs had to close at 18 instead at 17.45, so sooner than expected, had already "closed" sign hanging on the door, closed the case and brought out many visitors/customers. And in any case if the Castle closes at 19 because the convience intent closes at 18? MAH ...

  • Beautiful also the caves under the Castle. Not to be missed. are very different from those of Postojna: without lighting system (we see only through the lamp on the helmet that comes) and slippery, higher temperature.

  • It was an interesting experience. The audioguide is very useful and the staff is helpful if needed. The castle is worth to visit.  more »

  • As far as castles go, it was a good one. Nice holes in the wall to look through, couple of dungeons and stuff. The audio guide is incredibly thorough and at times not needed. For example, I tend to assume the room with the bed is the bedroom. Let's be honest, the main point is that the castle is built into the wall. Very impressive. Old nonetheless. Would recommend if nearby.
  • One of the most unique castles we have been to in Europe. The audio guide gives lots of informative and interesting facts about the castle and it's history. A courtesy bus will bring you from the caves to the castle which you have to take a narrow road.
  • An incredible and unique building surrounded by a lush landscape. When you get there you get an audio guide that takes you through the entire castle, room by room, explaining what they were used for but also outlining the history of the building and its owners. Overall the tour really exceeded my expectations! It's the first castle I've visited were you are free to visit all parts of the building. Moreover, if you are adventurous you can even book a tour through the cave tunnels that were used to bring in food!
  • A short drive away from the famous 'Postojna Cave' is this beautiful Castle not frequented by many travelers. Thought nothing much remains inside the castle (all interiors were ripped by soldiers during occupation), it presents great photo ops. Would recommend this place if you want to get away from the crowds and wish to have a medieval castle to yourself !v(barely 15 people when we visited the castle)
  • Did a tour with one of the electronic guides and it was fantastic. I could go at my own pace and it was easy to navigate. I have never been in a castle on the side of the cliff before, it was very interesting. A lot of great history to learn at this location and I highly recommend anyone visiting Slovenia to go.
