Perched on a high, rocky cliff for over 700 years, the unconquerable four levels of Predjama Castle were built within a cave mouth. Cross a drawbridge over a rushing river and visit the restored living quarters, chapel, and dungeon to get an idea of how people once lived here. The castle's most famous resident and the subject of many legends was Erazem Lueger, a 15th-century knight who rebelled against the Austrian emperor. See his hiding place called Erazem's Nook and ascend along Erazem's Tunnel. Do not miss the 16th-century treasure chest uncovered in the cellar in 1991. An observation post offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The castle entered the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest cave castle in the world. Predjama castle was fantastic. The audio your gives great insights into the history of the castle and it's inhabitants, and you really start rooting for Erasmus by the time you get to his fateful toilet perch. We've been slowly making our way through castles and this was my family's favorite so far.
Absolutely recommended! It is definitely worth a visit, the audio-guide tour is extremely well-done and makes the visit very interesting and fascinating. Landscape and view from the castle are beautiful.
By far the best castle we’ve visited in Slovenia. We go English audio guides and each stop was only 1-3 minutes long of short sweet need to know information. The castle sitting inside the cave is truely amazing to see and seems to have endless well kept rooms. The history behind is interesting as well. Behind the main castle, the cave continues which shows you where people used to live before the castle was built. A great castle and cave.
Living in Europe castles are everywhere, and I’ve probably seen about 30. Yes, all castles have their perks and details unlike no other, but this castle was really something else. Apparently this is the biggest castle attached to a cave in the world and it was pretty big. For adults 13€, students 11€ and kids(15-6) 8€. They also included audio guides with your tickets, and there were 29 exhibits. It had a beautiful view and many unique details. I went in the winter and it was pretty cold in the castle but I mean it’s in a cave. In the summer you can also go deeper into the caves, but you need to go on a special tour with equipment, so if you are not super adventurous this may not be for you. I personally really enjoyed this and found it very interesting. The architecture was really nice and I would totally love to go in the summer and do the extra tour. Overall, I’m going to recommend this to anyone who goes to Slovenia in the future. It’s really unique and special.
This is a great castle to visit. Must visit. World largest castle build in a cave. Amazing place. Interesting how ancient people built this castle. Of course there will be some walking and climbing inside. Do remember to pick up the audio guide machine at the entrance.
