Tartini Square (Tartinijev trg), Piran

4.6
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Piran
Sitting close to the water's edge, paved with white marble and surrounded by elegant 19th-century buildings, Tartini Square (Tartinijev trg) serves as the largest square in town and a hub of activity. The square was part of the harbor until 1894, when it was filled in and mounted with a statue of violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, after whom the square is named. Most of the buildings are older than the square itself; be sure to look for the Gothic house, the only building that has preserved its original exterior. The square's distinctive oval shape comes from the time when it served as an electric railway station; today it's a pedestrianized zone. Relax with a beer, have a bite of pizza or pastry at one of the outdoor cafes, and watch the locals go about their daily lives. Lovely central square in Piran, where one can imagine and feel the arrival of merchant ships. Italian atmosphere, it wasn't their Italian foundations.

Very small nice place. Ideal to spend one day -even a night there. Very friendly people. There are some places where you can swim. The restaurants and markets have good prices.

Magnificent square in a centre of beautiful city, Piran. Definitely do not miss this one! The sea was very clean at time of our visit and swimming next to local historical buildings is really romantic.

Tartini was one of the great Italian violin virtuosos. Piran was his birth place. Tartini square was once an inner dock that was later filled to create the square. In the middle of the square a statue of Tartini was placed in 1894. Right now the square has plenty tavernas and refreshment bars and is the main venue for concerts and events.

Great for sitting down in one of the cafes around here. Everything is clean and the music festivals hosted here are great to listen to.
