St. George's Church, Piran

Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Standing on a small hill reinforced with stone arches, St. George's Church dominates the town center. The present cathedral was built in the 14th century, but its Baroque facade dates from 1637. Legend has it that at the end of the 16th century Saint George blinded the skeptical mayor in order to motivate the citizens to restore the decaying church. Among the rich interior decoration, keep an eye out for a large medieval Gothic crucifix, a small silver-plated sculpture of St. George, and a Roman sarcophagus converted into a baptismal font. From the 46 m (150 ft) bell tower, a smaller copy of the Venetian San Marco Campanile, you can see panoramas of the Slovenian, Croatian, and Italian coast, and sometimes as far as the Julian Alps. • I like this place in summer when you can swim on the small beach under the church and admire It from the sea. You can take a walk from Fiesa beach to the church an enjoy the view or have a great photoshoot on sunset
  • One of the most fascinating churches in Slovenia and the most iconic in Slovenian coast. You can see it from each point you look at Piran (from the sea, from Strunjan, from Croatia or from Tartini square). It has a view point in front of it from where you can see Itqly, Croatia and part of Slovenian coast as well as overview on the city and Alps if the weather is right. Inside it has a Jesus on Y cross that is very rare to see.
  • Ok backpackers- watch out for disappearing numbers after 25- it is in a lane to the left. Very large dorm 20 beds. Attractive vineyard view from rear. Handy to tram near bus/train stations. Go up steps up to nearest bridge.
  • Simply said Wow! What an amazing place. It's not too crowded and very clean. A streetartist was playing gorgeous guitar music. The place is not easily accessible by a wheelchair or for people with a problem with walking. I recommend it for everyone, wonderful view!
  • Great view over Piran a small and romantic city in Slovenia.
