Metelkova, Ljubljana

3.9/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web
See another side of Slovenia's capital in one of the alternative clubs of Metelkova. Often compared to Copenhagen's Kristiania, Metelkova is a self-declared "autonomous culture zone" occupying former military barracks painted with street art. Its seven buildings include a hostel set in a former prison, several clubs and live music venues, artist studios, art galleries, and the only women's center in the country. This city-within-a-city hosts numerous social and cultural events and is home to several community clubs for gays and lesbians, as well as for people with disabilities. • The Metelkova is an essential place to visit. It was an old military barracks, where now is occupied by artists where during the day you can see some of the work in workshops, is a crazy place where who is art lover goes delirious, even those who do not is, the metelkova must be a point in Ljubljana by the peculiarity and extravagance of the urban art scene. During the night is a place of gathering of the local music lovers, but are very well received and integrated in this environment, I went out many times with friends and the evenings are brutal. Even if you want to just go drink some beers and be out there in the conversation, or if you want to go out, you have various types of bars to suit all tastes from jazz, techno, dub, punk, Heavy metal, LBGT bar, due to this diversity, the environment at first glance may seem cumbersome, but it is super quiet. I advise you to visit both day and night because the place seems quite another.
